How To Make a Flaming Jack-o’ Lantern

  • Prepare the Pumpkin. First you’ll need to buy a big pumpkin and carve it. Cut a hole in the top and clean the pumpkin guts off it.
  • Prepare the Fire. Prior to Halloween, put a roll of single ply toliet paper in the paint bucket and soak it in kerosene.
  • Set the Stage. I had a couple of dance party lights and a fog machine to incorporate into the show. These sit behind the fire and produce some nice effects.
  • Showtime! The end result looks like this. Here’s some video that shows the fog and lights with the flaming jack-o’-lantern.

Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients! (Select Your Materials)

In order to get started you will need a few simple materials to help you with your build. Some of these materials may already exist at your home, while others will need to be purchased. Provided below is a comprehensive list of everything you will need.

Step 2: Brew Your Potion! (Prepare the Fuel)

Gather together your rolls of toilet paper, empty metal paint cans, and kerosene so that you can take them to an open air environment where you won't be breathing in an excess of harmful fumes. Then, take your 1 gal. empty metal paint cans and place one to two rolls of toilet paper inside each of them.

Step 3: Prepare the Sacrifices! (Carve Your Jack-o'-lanterns)

This step describes the traditional method for carving a pumpkin into a jack-o'-lantern. If you are already familiar with this process, feel free to skip to step 4. The only suggestions I would include are; 1. creating a large lid opening will allow the flames to reach higher and become more visible, 2.

Step 4: Drag Them to the Stake! (Position Your Jack-o'-lanterns)

Select a location in your front yard at least 7-10 ft. away from anything that could potentially catch fire.* This includes; the house, trees, bushes, and any other Halloween decorations you might be displaying.

Step 5: Light 'Em Up! (Ignite the Fuel)

Now that everything is prepared its time to start the show. Start by bringing the fire extinguisher, paint cans with fuel, pair of Nitrile cleaning gloves, and barbecue lighter all over to the display area where you can easily access them.

Step 6: Spread Their Ashes! (Extinguish the Flames)

When you are ready to wrap things up for the night, proper care must be taken in order to safely extinguish the flames and clean up your display. There are several methods to safely extinguish the flames.

Step 2: Cut a Cap

Cut around the stem of the pumpkin at an angle (with the knife slanted in towards the stem of the pumpkin) After you are done cutting all the way around, remove the stem. This will serve as your lid later on.

Step 3: Gut It

Remove the guts from the pumpkin. To start it should be easy simple to pull them out by hand, but this is going to quickly become too difficult.

Step 4: Design a Face

Draw a face on a piece of paper and then cut it out and tape it to the pumpkin.

Step 5: Trace

With a marker, trace the outline of the face onto the pumpkin and remove the paper.

Step 6: Cut

Cut out the pumpkin's face. For the larger and more complicated shapes like the mouth, it help to cut it out in smaller pieces instead of trying to remove one large chunk from the pumpkin.

Step 9: Drill Holes

Use the two mounts that you just cut out as drilling guides on the aluminum extrusion.

Step 10: Attach Things

Stack the two motor mounts and align the motor atop it. Zip tie it all to the aluminum bracket.
