No Sew Fleece Blankets Make Great Gifts

Whether you’re getting started on gifts for Christmas or are just looking for a craft idea, no sew fleece blankets are a great EASY project. Most fabric frays when it’s washed, meaning blankets have to be sewn together and flipped inside out or have a binding strip sewn along the edges.

How to Make a No Sew Fleece Blanket

The process is easy: you’ll layer two pieces of fleece together, trim them up so the edges are straight, and then use one of four easy techniques to attach the two layers and finish the edges. Throughout this week I’ll show you how to finish your blanket with a tied edge, a braided edge, a fringed edge, or cute little bows.

What Kind of Fleece Should I Use?

I generally buy fleece from Jo-Ann, and they sell three different types: Blizzard Fleece, Anti-Pill Fleece, and Luxe Fleece. Luxe fleece is gorgeous, but it’s too heavy to use for a doubly layer no sew fleece blanket. For these blankets I recommend using Anti-Pill Fleece. Here’s why:

How Much Fabric Will I Need?

You can make fleece blankets in any size you’d like. For a baby blanket, plan to purchase a yard of each fabric you’d like to use. For a blanket that’s a good size for kids, you’ll need one and a half yards of fabric (2 pieces, 1.5 yards each = three yards total).

Buy Fleece on Sale

DO NOT buy fleece at Jo-Ann at full price! Fleece goes on sale regularly (60%-70% off) especially during the fall and winter months, so it’s worth waiting for a sale. For a child size blanket, when Blizzard fleece is on sale you’ll be able to get both pieces of fleece for about $10. For the same size blanket, Anti-Pill Fleece will be closer to $20.

Getting Started: Cut Straight Edges

To begin making your blanket, you’ll need to even up the edges of your fabric. Lay the piece of fabric that will be the back of your blanket down on a flat surface, like the floor, with the right side (front side) of the fabric down. The right side of Anti Pill Fleece is the fuzzier side, or the side that the print looks more clear on.

How to Make a No Sew Fleece Blanket with Fringe

This single layer no-sew fringed fleece blanket makes a wonderful quick and easy DIY gift.

How to Make a Single Layer Fringed Fleece Blanket Craft

I bought some fabric for Emma to make one for my niece who is due to arrive any day now, and we took pictures of the steps so that you can make one of your own! I love that the edges look fancy but are so easy that even an eight-year-old can put this blanket together, with a little scissor help from an adult.

Step 1: Choose the Fabric

Choose a print and a contrasting or matching solid. I like to use strong, bold contrasts. You will need a solid and a print that are the same size. My sample uses a nice dark hunter green for the back.

Step 2: Line Up the Two Fabric Pieces

Line up the two fabrics, right sides OUT. Anti-pill solids are FUZZY on the right side. Anti-pill prints will be more distinct on the front side. Regular prints are hard to tell -- use the side that appeals to you.

Step 5: Cutting the Fringe

Cut fringe on all four sides of the blanket. Cut through both layers of fabric at the same time. Fringe pieces should be a little wider than the width of your finger. Cut in from the edge 5 inches. I like to lay a yard-stick across the fabric, 5 inches from the edge so that I know how far in to make my cut.

Step 6: Begin Tying Knots

Leave your blanket laying flat on the surface, with all fringes lined up. I find it easier to start tying from the left and work right, going around the blanket. If you are left-handed, you may find it easier to start on the right and work left. These knots are called balloon knots...

Step 7: Continue Around the Blanket

Tie all the fringes together on all four sides of the blanket. You are Finished! Wasn't that easy? All the knots should be snug up to the blanket, but not too tight.

Materials Needed for No-Sew Blanket

2 or 3 yards of Fleece Fabric (see sizing reference below – How many yards will I need?) For reference, I ordered 2 yards.

How Many Yards of Fabric Do I Need to Make a Throw Blanket?

Here’s where you need to do a little math. Ok, not really because I did it all for you.

What are the Best Scissors for Cutting Fleece?

You may also be wondering about scissors. Fleece is thicker than cotton. So I recommend using sharp fabric scissors to cut through your fabric. This will also ensure you get nice, even cuts for your fringe. I swear by these Singer fabric scissors – they are cheap and cut through things (even a stair runner), like buttah.

Just How Warm and Cozy is this Blanket?

Extremely warm and cozy!! In my opinion. This is a bit of a personal viewpoint, I realize.

Cutting the Materials

When you purchase fleece by the yard, it almost always needs to be trimmed and straightened. At the very least, you need to cut off the selvage edge.

Measure and Cut the Blanket Corners

Measure a square at each corner that is the same length as what you want the fringe to be. The sample fringe is about 6 inches long, so the square is 6 inches from each side in the corner. You can adjust this if you'd like, starting with a square that is anywhere from 4 inches to 8 inches.

Cut the Blanket Fringe

Next, start making the fringe along each edge, cutting through both thicknesses of fleece. Each strip should be the same length as your starter square and anywhere from 1 inch to 2 inches wide. The sample is 6 inches long and 2 inches wide.

Tying the Fringe

To attach the top piece of fleece to the bottom piece of fleece, tie the fringe together. Hold a set of fringe pieces (a back and front piece), and tie a square knot .
