Pour warm water into the volcano until it is 1/2 to 3/4 of the way full. Add several drops of food coloring. Add a squirt of detergent. This helps the ‘lava’ foam up and flow. Add a couple of spoonfuls of baking soda. When you are ready to start the eruption, pour vinegar into your volcano.

You only need a few materials to make a foam volcano.
  1. 1/2 cup of liquid hydrogen peroxide.
  2. 10 drops of liquid food coloring.
  3. 1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap.
  4. 1 packet of dry yeast.
  5. A 16-ounce plastic soda or water bottle OR a bucket that size.
  6. A small cup to hold your yeast and at least 3 tablespoons of warm water.

How do you make Lava foam in a volcano?

Pour warm water into the volcano until it is 1/2 to 3/4 of the way full. Add several drops of food coloring. Add a squirt of detergent. This helps the ‘lava’ foam up and flow.

How do you make a model volcano erupt?

Creating a model volcano and making it erupt is a fun science experiment that teaches kids about chemical reactions. There are several variations on this experiment. You can create the volcano with dough, insulating foam or paper mache, and you can also make the volcano erupt with baking soda or soda pop.

Why does soap make foam erupt?

When you add the yeast, it acts as a catalyst (a helper) to release the extra oxygen gas and the soap helps to create all the foam. Try it out yourself! The second experiment with the giant foam eruption at the end used a more powerful hyrogen peroxide and a different chemical for a catalyst.

How do you make a homemade volcano with food coloring?

Add several drops of food coloring. Add a squirt of detergent. This helps the ‘lava’ foam up and flow. Add a couple of spoonfuls of baking soda. When you are ready to start the eruption, pour vinegar into your volcano. You can recharge the volcano with more baking soda and vinegar.

What two chemicals will explode when mixed?

For decades, science enthusiasts have delighted at the famously energetic way sodium and potassium explode on contact with water.

What is a blowing agent in foam?

Blowing agents are additives used in the manufacture of foamed plastics, which have the advantage of lightness, contribute to material and cost savings, and are distinguished by the fact that they are thermally insulating. Blowing agents usually create fine and regular cellular structures during polymer processing.

What happens when you mix salt vinegar and baking soda?

The mixture quickly foams up with carbon dioxide gas. If enough vinegar is used, all of the baking soda can be made to react and disappear into the vinegar solution. The reaction is: Sodium bicarbonate and acetic acid reacts to carbon dioxide, water and sodium acetate.

Does vinegar and baking soda foam up?

You may have made a homemade volcano by combining baking soda and vinegar as a kid. The two products generate quite a reaction. When vinegar (dilute acetic acid) and baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) mix together, the pair "foams up" to produce carbon dioxide gas, as well as liquid water, acetate ions and sodium ions.

What is in Devil's toothpaste?

Devil's Toothpaste is really the same as the famous Elephant Toothpaste experiment, just executed with higher concentration hydrogen peroxide. In this case, [Integza] is using 50% hydrogen peroxide combined with potassium permanganate as a catalyst.

What chemical reaction makes things explode?

Explosives are substances that undergo a rapid oxidation reaction with the production of large quantities of gases. It is the sudden buildup of gas pressure (see products above) that constitutes the nature of an explosion.

What causes foam in a chemical reaction?

During the polymerization reaction, a small amount of water reacts with some of the diisocyanate. A decomposition reaction occurs and produces carbon dioxide gas which causes the solution to foam and to expand in volume.

Can expanding foam explode?

DON'T use expanding foam near a spark or open flame. The compressed gas that propels the liquid polyurethane components from the can is highly explosive, and using the product in a closed-in space, such as under a cabinet or in a crawl space, increases the risk of the gas accumulating and a spark igniting it.

FAQ and troubleshooting

I dropped some anthocyanin into the plastic cup as I was measuring it. Can I continue the experiment with the same cup?

Disposal

Dispose of solid waste together with household garbage. Pour solutions down the sink. Wash with an excess of water.

Scientific description

Citric acid H3C6H5O7 and sodium carbonate Na2CO3 split into ions in water. Molecules of citric acid split into citrate anions C6H5O73- and hydrogen ions H+ , while molecules of sodium carbonate split into carbonate anions CO32- and sodium cations Na+ .

Step 1: Materials

Materials: Hydrogen Peroxide An empty soda bottle Dishsoap Dry yeast Measuring cup Empty cup Small spoon Measuring table spoon OPTIONAL: Food coloring Funnel

Step 2: Pour the Peroxide

First, measure 3/4 of a cup of peroxide. Then pour it into the soda bottle.

Step 6: Add the Yeast

Add about 2.5-3 tablespoons of dry yeast to the empty cup. Then pour warm water in the cup as well.

Step 7: Mix It Up

Take the small spoon and mix the yeast until it becomes a watery substance like in the picture below. (Note: I transferred the mixture to a larger cup for easier mixing)

Step 8: Ready for Action

Simply pour the yeast mixture into the soda bottle and watch it erupt. Make sure to do this outside because it can get messy. ATTN: The yeast i used was a year old, and was not as active as a new package of yeast would usually be. So in that case it was not as foamy as it should have been.

You only need a few materials to make a foam volcano

Rober did a few different variations on the elephant toothpaste experiment on his channel.

The reaction starts with liquid hydrogen peroxide, and you can use different strengths for more or less foam

Mark Rober uses hydrogen peroxide as the base for the elephant toothpaste experiment.

In a separate cup, combine dry yeast and warm water for the at-home catalyst, instead of the potassium iodide that Uhas used

Rober used a lot of yeast for his world record attempt, but at home you just need one packet.

Uhas and Rober used huge contraptions that required multiple people to pour the catalyst into the peroxide, but you can just use a funnel at home

Uhas and Dobrik recruited a team of "Vlog Squad" members to pour the catalyst into the vat.

Uhas told Insider that the foam is "self-cleaning."

Some of the foam flew off into the California sky after Uhas and Dobrik's attempt.

Step 1: What You Need

you will need: a shampoo bottle a cap for it 'squeaky pink' soap (works the best) water hands (if you find some other soap that work please post in the comments)

Step 4: Shake It!!!

with the cap on and shut, shake the bottle for about 2-5 seconds. now open the bottle and squart it WITH THE BOTTLE RIGHT SIDE UP!

Equipment

Creating a culinary foam is easier than it looks, and - unlike some other modernist techniques – the appropriate equipment won’t require you to break the bank.

Uses

The joy of foams is that they can be both sweet and savoury. Examples of sweet foams include James Sommerin’s cardamom espuma and Simon Haigh’s banana espuma, but there are a diverse amount of options available - so don’t limit yourself.
