How to make a sachet filling
I remember my grandmother was always putting soap in the closet and drawers. So why not to use soap for a sachet? The smell isn’t offensive or overpowering usually and the release of the smell is gradual and lasts a very long time.
Step 1 – Cutting Your Fabric
In this tutorial, my fabric was 5 inches by 6 inches. I chose to cut it this way because of how much space the lace took. However, if you aren’t using a lace edged fabric, feel free to cut it in a square, either 5 inches by 5 inches, or slightly smaller, 4 inches by 4 inches.
Step 2 – Sewing the Sachet
I used a sewing machine for this project, but in all honesty, this can be sewn by hand. Using a straight stitch, I sewed the three non-lace sides of the sachet.
Step 3 – Creating the Potpourri
In a small glass bowl, pour in one cup of lavender buds and two cups of rice. Then add in 15 drops of lavender essential oil. Mix everything together well with a spoon.
Step 4 – Finishing the Sachet
Gently spoon the lavender buds and rice into the sachet. Once filled, hand sew the sachet closed. Because this sachet has lace, I was able to hand sew it right next to the seem, which made the stitching barely noticeable.
Step 5 – Add Ribbon
This step is completely optional. I added a cute little purple jute cord ribbon to the sachet. This served as an identifier for what smell the sachet holds. I use different colors for different scents. On top of everything else, it’s quite cute!

Preparation for Both Versions
Mix the dried lavender and the uncooked rice at a ratio of roughly 1 to 1, so one spoon of rice with one spoon of lavender
Version 1: Little Lavender Squares
Start by cutting out little squares from your fabric I’ve used a measurement of 9cm x 9cm (3.5 inches) but you can choose any other size of course. You will need two fabric squares to sew one sachet.
Version 2: Little Lavender Bags
For the little bags, cut out rectangles of roughly 24cm x 8cm (5.5 x 3.2 inches) but again, feel free to make adjustments if you wish. This time you just need one rectangle to sew one bag.
How to Embroider the Lavender Pattern
This little sachet is a perfect starter project. It’s inexpensive, the pattern is simple, and you get the reward of a sachet at the end. There are only two stitches in this little embroidery pattern, the stems are done in a back stitch, and the purple blossoms are a lazy daisy stitch.
How to Use Embroidery Floss
Real embroidery floss is different than the dollar store cotton. Embroidery floss has six threads that you separate for different purposes. For the stems you will separate the green thread into 2 strands, the blossoms are done in 3 strands.
The Daisy Stitch
Use the daisy stitch for the purple blossoms, the stitches can be in variable lengths from 1/8 the to 1/3 inch long. I made a really large on so I can illustrate the stops, it’s actually very fast to sew.
Sewing Lavender Sachets
Besides the embroidered squares, you will need to cut twelve 5″ by 6″ pieces of white linen, and eight 5″ by 6 ” of blue fabric.
Finishing the Sachet
Sew a length of lace along the front sachet panel. For the back panel, you can leave the folded portion as is, or sew along the edge. I left mine as is.
