Should You Use Real or Artificial Leaves?

This project can work with both real and artificial leaves, and they both have advantages and disadvantages.

Tips for Using Artificial Leaves

The first time I made this craft with my kids, we used real leaves that we had collected from the ground outside. Everything worked perfectly for us and we still have that bowl today.

Step 1: Cut the Stems of Your Leaves

The first thing that you need to do is cut the stems off your leaves. Using scissors cut to the edge of the leaves and throw the stems away.

Step 2: Blow Up Your Balloon

Next step is to blow your balloon to the size you would like your bowl. We will be using the top of the balloon (opposite side of the tab). Tie your balloon and place it firmly into your bowl to hold the balloon steady.

Step 3: Start Glueing

First you must brush a layer of Mod Podge onto a the balloon in the place you are starting. I recommend starting at the top and working your way down. Take one leaf and brush the mod podge onto both sides of the leaf. Place the leave on your balloon.

Step 4: Continue Layering the Leaves

Continue to layer the leaves as you work your way down the balloon. Place multiple leaves at the very top of the balloon to firm the bottom of your bowl and create balance for when your bowl is finished. Continue to build your bowl down to your desired depth of the bowl.

Step 5: Let Dry

When your finished layering your leaves set aside to dry. Let dry until it is completely hardened.

Step 6: Deflate the Balloon

After your bowl is completely dry it is time to deflate your balloon. Cut a small hole in the tab of the balloon and slowly release the air out. Do not be alarmed if your bowl shrinks during the deflation, it will return to size. The balloon should pull right off the bowl.

Bowl or Balloon?

Should you use a bowl or balloon to make your autumn leaf bowl? Well – that’s up to you. In this tutorial we use a balloon, but you can absolutely use a bowl from your kitchen.

Type of Leaves to Use

You’ll want to use faux leaves – you can’t do this project with real leaves (I’ve been asked). I’ve had the most success with leaves that don’t have thick veins.

Keeping the Leaves Down

One of the biggest challenges you are going to have with this project is keeping the leaves down as you add the Stiffy. You might find that they keep popping up . and that’s where plastic wrap and rubber bands are going to be your best friend. If you get the “pop up,” continue on the project adding leaves until you are satisfied with the amount..

Using Regular Mod Podge

Yes – you can do this leaf bowl project with regular Mod Podge. The difference is that the Mod Podge won’t dry as hard as Stiffy will. So I’m going to leave that up to you. If you’ve used Mod Podge before, you know it’s somewhat flexible. Stiffy will harden more like you would expect a bowl shape to be.

Instructions

Blow up the balloon and place tied-side-down in a bowl or cup so that the balloon stands up. Another alternative is that you can cover a large bowl in plastic wrap.

Notes

Fill your DIY bowl with seasonal décor, or use as a catch-all bowl for things like keys and sunglasses to last you through the fall season.
