A cluster of Raspberry Pi computers can start with as little as two and grow into hundreds. For our project, we’re starting with a modest four. Each one, known as a ‘node’, will carry out part of our task for us and they all work in parallel to produce the result a lot quicker than a single node ever could.

Consider the power requirements for your cluster. With our four nodes it’s not going to be ideal to have four PSUs driving them. As well as being ugly, it’s inefficient. Instead, track down a good-quality, powerful multi-port USB charger that is capable of powering your chosen number of computers.

A cluster works by communication. A ‘master’ node is in charge of the cluster and the ‘workers’ are told what to do and to report back the results on demand. To achieve this we’re using wired Ethernet on a dedicated network.

We’re going to access each node using wireless LAN so the Ethernet port is available for cluster work. For each ‘node’, burn Raspbian Buster Lite to a microSD card, boot it up, and make sure it’s up to date with sudo apt -y update && sudo apt -y upgrade. The wired Ethernet link is known as the cluster’s ‘backbone’. You need to manually enable the backbone, as there is no DHCP server to help. We’re going to use the 10.0.0.0 subnet. If your regular network uses this, choose something different like 192.168.10.0. For each node, from the command line, edit the network configuration:

For the cluster to work, each worker node needs to be able to talk to the master node without needing a password to log in. To do this, we use SSH keys. This can be a little laborious, but only needs to be done once. On each node, run the following:

The magic that makes our cluster work is MPI (Message Passing Interface). This protocol allows multiple computers to delegate tasks amongst themselves and respond with results. We’ll install MPI on each node of our cluster and, at the same time, install the Python bindings that allow us to take advantage of its magical powers.

The first idea can be to build a cluster to get more RAM. This may be a good idea if your application need a lot of RAM, but the total cost will not be the best choice.
Faster disk access?
I will be quick on this one, you already know that a SD card is not the faster way to store or access data. In general, we consider that recent SSD models are over 10 times faster than any SD card. Even if Datalight has found a way to increase SD cards speed (c heck the summary on ZDNet ), that’s not the way we use SD cards on our Raspberry Pi.
More CPU cores?
The last idea is want to explore is to have a huge amount of CPU cores with a cluster. And in fact, that’s almost the only reason why you might want to build a Raspberry Pi Cluster.
Basic Cluster
The first one is just to build your first cluster. There is no specific end goal with it, except to learn how it works. For example, if you have two Raspberry Pi at home (any models), you can follow my tutorial to try this.
Docker
The next two are more technologies than examples, but it’s important to know how it works on the software part.
Kubernetes
Kubernetes is the next step once you master what is Docker and how it works. In the previous tutorial, you may have seen that we use Docker to manage the application, and Swarm to use it on several nodes. Kubernetes is like an upgrade to Swarm, with more features for scaling, running and monitoring the applications.
Supercomputer
Let’s dive to something more concrete now. Once you understand and experiment the cluster basics, you can start to think bigger. It’s almost the same process, repeated many times 🙂

Use a Raspberry Pi cluster to learn Linux or learn how to handle a MySQL or Postgres database.
2. Make Your Very Own Homelab
You can build a homelab out of a Raspberry Pi cluster. If you are a software developer you can deploy versions of your software with Docker or Kubernetes, host your own private GitHub system, fast-compile different versions of your software at the same time using the resources of several cluster nodes at once.
3. Self-Hosted Private Cloud
A Raspberry Pi cluster is the way to go if you want your own internal private cloud.
