Cloche comes from the French word for bell thus, in this application a garden cloche is a bell-shaped cover for plants. Cloches are popular in French pottage gardens to help keep frost off of young tender plants, we will be using them to keep chickens off our plants.

How to make your chicken wire cloche

Measure your form and cut a piece of wire slightly larger than your form (say 2-3 inches larger on all sides)

Step 2: Cut Out the Pieces

First, cut out all the pattern pieces. Then, take the Hat crown front piece, wrong-side up and pin it to the hat top piece, also wrong-side up. Head over to the sewing machine and use a 1/2 inch seam allowance and stitch the pieces together.

Step 3: Finishing Up the Main Part of the Hat

Now set that piece aside for a moment. Take the back crown piece and the back top piece. Lay them out as you see in my images - and pin them together. The back crown piece is the bigger piece. Sew them just as you did with the front crown and top pieces.

Step 4: Adding the Brim

For this step, cut out the pattern piece for the brim. Have a pin ready as well as a needle and thread. Fold the tapered end in half (see image) and then in half again and pinch and pin it. Then sew that little end up - an inch and a 1/2 starting at the end. Then get more pins ready and start at one side of the hat.

Step 5: Sewing the Flowers On

Now for the fun part! Time to cut out flowers and get them ready and then sew it on. I basically tried the hat on again after sewing the flowers and held the flowers to the side to determine where to pin it on. Once pinned and I was happy with the placement, I then hand-sewed them onto the side.

Step 6: Finished Product

The cloche hat doesn't take too long to make. Once you have the basic hat shape - the fun thing is that you have unlimited options for customizing it the way you like it! It's fun wearing it too because you don't see these hats everyday - a lot of people have complimented.

1. Cut six small curved branches from a conifer tree

If you have cedar trees in your area, these are ideal for this project since cedar has natural rot-resisting qualities. We used cedar for this project, but you can also use the small ‘bendy’ branches from most conifers. Look for branches that are curved, and cut them each to about 5’ – 6’ in length.

2. Trim the branches and sharpen the thick ends

Use nippers to prune off any branch spurs and use a hatchet to sharpen the bottom end of each branch so it can be speared into the soil easily.

4. Pull the opposing branches into a hoop and tie them together

When pulling the branches together, you can twist them around each other which helps to form the curved shape. Then tie both ends tightly with several wraps of string to secure the hoops. We used sisal for the string since this is what we had on hand. A braided nylon string would be better since it would last for years, but that’s your choice.

5. Set a straight stick along the top and lash it to the center of each hoop

Use a straight branch, a broom handle, or a length of 1” x 2” lumber (we used a split piece of cedar) to make the ridge for your cloche. Simply lay it along the top and tie it securely to the hoops, taking care to pull each hoop into position so that the ridge is tied to the approximate center.

6. Attach the clear plastic sheeting to form the cover

Cut a piece of clear poly wide enough to cover the hoops and long enough so that is extends about 18” beyond each end of the cloche. Set the sheeting over the frame and fasten it to the hoops at each end with a few staples. Put a few staples into the ridge as well. Now you can roll up the surplus plastic at each end to the desired opening size.
