How many drawers are in Shanty 2 Chic dresser?
Shanty 2 Chic has a DIY dresser plan that uses wheels and hardware to really make the wood stand out, giving it a little bit of an industrial look. There are 6 drawers in the dresser, giving you plenty of storage room for all your clothes. The free plans include general instructions, a cut list, a materials list, diagrams, photos, and tips.
Step 2: Step 1 - Assembling the Basic Frame
In this first step, we will put together the basic frame, including the two sides and top of the dresser. I had the plywood pieces cut at the store for me. And, then I used my miter saw to cut the (6) 1" x 2" x 15 3/4" pieces. Please see the Sketchup models for details about exactly where to place those pieces.
Step 3: Building the 2" X 2" Frame
In this step you will need to use the 2" x 2" pieces to build the frame. As you can see in the photos, I used pocket hole screws (and glue) to attach the sides to the top pieces. You need to make sure things are done accurately here. If you have a corner clamp, this would help a lot.
Step 4: Attach the Frame
Now it's time to use those 2 1/2" pocket hole screws and attach the frame to the sides and top piece. Be sure to glue it and clamp it as needed while doing this. Take your time and make sure it's all even and level.
Step 5: Making the Dresser Drawers
In this step, it's time to make the drawers. Be sure you have all the pieces cut and the pocket holes drilled. See images for details. I used pocket hole screws on the front (which was later hidden by the front face) and on the back (which is not visible when in use). I then glued, clamped and drilled them together.
Step 6: Drawer Slides
In this step, it's time to install the drawer slides onto the 1" x 2" slats on the side pieces. I would love to give a more thorough instructable and explain this well, but it is hard to explain! I found an incredible, simple little video showing how to install them fast and easy.
Step 7: Staining, Hardware and Handles
Next, I stained the piece after sanding and prepping it. I like how the drawer fronts stained, but the frame of 2" x 2" pieces was quite blotchy. I will continue to try to fix it, but for now, this is how it is! I also plan on doing a coat of polyurethane on it later. The whole process takes a while once you get into staining.

Step 1: Wood for the Top
The fundamental design of this dresser is basic, clean base with contrasting wood on top. For the wood on top, you could use anything. I decided to go with a piece of nice CVG douglas fir, however whatever you have on hand would be great, you could even stain plywood or pine for a nice contrasting look!
Step 2: Building the Top
In order to laminate the two pieces of wood together, I decided to use dowels. I have a small doweling jig which makes it really easy to line up the dowels, however another option would be pocket screws, or simply gluing and clamping the boards together.
Step 3: Staining & Finishing Top
To give it a little bit of color I decided to go with a mahogany red gel stain. I really like using gel stains because they don't splatter and it's easier to control the color. I started with the bottom, and then I turned it around and covered the top.
Step 4: Wood for the Base
Next up cut up a piece of 2 x 10 framing lumber for the posts and the rails, however you could use any framing lumber you have around.
Step 5: Drawers
Next I'm going to have to divide the space for the drawers, because I'm going to add these rails for support. I'm not going to be using any mechanical drawer sliders, I'm making my own with wood rails instead.
Step 6: Finishing
When the base was finished it was time to prime it. I decided to paint my dresser using a spray gun because it's a lot faster, however you could certainly paint by hand. Once the primer had dried, I sprayed on two top coats of flat paint.
Step 7: Hardware & Assemble
Next I measured for the hardware, and I drilled holes to put on some nice brushed nickel pulls.
