- Step 2: Cut Off One Side of the Apple Cut off one side of the apple (as shown). ...
- Step 3: Cut a Wedge ...
- Step 4: Cut Another Wedge ...
- Step 5: Cut Yet Another Wedge ...
- Step 6: Assemble Wedges ...
- Step 7: Cut the Head ...
- Step 8: Cut a Hole
Step 1: Step 1
Use a knife to cut the apple on a 70-degree angle and cut all the way through.
Step 2: Step 2
We are going to use the half that doesn't have the stem on it and set aside two apple seeds for later.
Step 3: Step 3
Now, we will start cutting the wing. Place one chopstick in front of the apple and one behind it. Don't cut down the centre of the apple, but instead slightly to the right, like the example above. Cut straight down and the chopstick will stop the cut.
Step 4: Step 4
Next, cut along the chopsticks and stop once you reach the other cut and the apple slice pops out.
Step 5: Step 5
Take out piece you just cut out and put it on its side then position the knife 1 cm away from the edge and cut straight down until you hit the chopsticks.
Step 6: Step 6
Flip the apple (as shown in the photo above) and position the knife again 1 cm away from the edge and cut down to the chopsticks.
Step 7: Step 7
Once the apple slice pops out, repeat the steps with the smaller piece again and place them into the apple. Repeat those steps on the other side.
Step 1: Watch the Video!
WARNING: Use of video content is at own risk. There may be risks associated with these projects that require adult supervision.
Step 2: Choose Your Apple
All you really need for this little trick is an apple, and a knife. 2 additional butter-knives are helpful, but optional. Try cutting your apple at a slight diagonal so that it cuts right through the center of the apple core. This is important, because it will give you access to the seeds inside, and we need 2. You'll see why later on.
Step 3: Making Apple Wedges
Take the half of the apple that still has the bottom attached, and place it face down on a cutting board. We're going to be making careful cuts into the apple, and I found it was very helpful to use 2 butter knives placed perpendicular to the top and bottom. Now use your knife to carefully cut down into the apple from the top, and just to the right side of the apple core.
Step 4: Give It Wings!
The goal is to cut each of these new wedges into 3 smaller wedges, then layer them together to give the effect of feathers and wings. The process is very similar to how you cut them before, only this time, rather than slicing in from the side, try turning the wedge over to the left, and slicing down.
Step 5: Making the Head
To form the head, we can use the other half of the apple and place it in-between our butter-knife spacers as we did the other one, except this time we're not going to cut out any wedges. Carefully cut sideways along the butter-knives to create an apple slice about 1/4" thick. If you repeat this 3 or 4 times, you'll end up with different cross sections that sport a variety of shapes and sizes. Pick a piece that looks like a heart that's been flattened at the top.
Step 6: Putting It All Together
To finish up, just take your apple seeds and place them when you'd like the eyes to go, then press them into place with the side of one of the butter knives. When both eyes are in place, simple drop the neck down into place, and your apple swan is finished! I tried spritzing mine with a little lemon juice to help prevent it from turning brown, then we set it out for entertaining guests we have over for dinner that evening.
Step 7: Variations
If you try this with different apples, you get different looking birds. No 2 birds will look exactly the same. In fact, I think some of mine look more like ducks :)
Step 1: The Body
In this step we will create the very basics of the Swan's body. Follow the step numbers and the pictures. (e.g. Step 1 = Picture 1)
Step 2: The Wings
In this step we will make the wings for the swan. Follow the step numbers and the pictures. (e.g. Step 1 = Picture 1)
Step 3: The Head
Now lets make the neck and head! Follow the step numbers and the pictures. (e.g. Step 1 = Picture 1)
Step 4: Completed!
Congratulations, you just made a quick and easy swan, from just an apple! If you enjoyed this instuctable, please comment and subscribe for more! Thanks.
Step 2: The Main Wedges
Now we will create our two main wedges. Place two butter knifes down on the cutting board or two pieces of wood that are roughly 1/4 inch thick. Eyeball the middle of the apple slice then go about a 1/4 inch from the middle and make two cuts. Cut all the way down to the butter knife (our guide).
Step 3: 1 Little, 2 Little, 3 Little Wedges..
Now we take one of the wedges lay it flat, and then cut straight down, about 1/4 inch in from the edge. Flip the apple slice over and cut down again. This will create another smaller wedge. Repeat that process two more times. Combined these will create 1 wing. Next do the same process with the other wedge, so you have two wings.
Step 4: Wing Assembly
Now we put the wedges back in place and then slide them back a little bit, forming the wing. Place the wings on the base upside down T. There we go we have the body and wings for our Swan/Dragon.
Step 5: Neck and Head
Now let's make our neck and head. Take the other smaller half and cut out a 1/4th thick disk. Then make a cut diagonally at the top where it is slightly concave. This forms the top of the head and part of the beak. Then make another cut on the inside of the apple piece, which will create the underside of the beak.
Step 6: Eyes
Take a seed and place it on the head, press down with your finger to make it stay, or use the flat side of your knife.
Step 7: Neck Slot
Now we need to create our slot where the neck will sit. On top of the body make two cuts straight down about 1 inch. The cuts should be in the middle and about 1/4 inch from each other. We want the slot to be the same width as our neck piece. Then make a slit across on top and on the bottom, and work out the little piece of apple.
Step 8: Done!
Now place that neck and you are done. Pretty easy right? :) Take one of these to your next party and you are sure to impress some people hahaha. :) Make sure to spray it with some lemon juice or something similar, this will help keep the apple from browning. Enjoy!
Step 2: Cut Off One Side of the Apple
Cut off one side of the apple (as shown). This will be the head and neck.
Step 3: Cut a Wedge
Cut a wedge about the size of a quarter of the apple about 1/2 an inch from the center.
Step 4: Cut Another Wedge
Cut a smaller wedge out of the one you just cut leaving about a quarter of an inch of the first wedge.
Step 5: Cut Yet Another Wedge
Cut a smaller wedge from the wedge you just cut so you have sizes resembling the picture. Repeat steps 3-5 for the other side making sure to leave some uncut apple (3/4-1 inch is good).
Step 6: Assemble Wedges
Assemble your wedges as seen in the picture and place them on the body.
Step 7: Cut the Head
Cut the head out of the side of the apple you have left as in the pictures. Make sure you cut off the skin of the side.
Step 8: Cut a Hole
Cut a small hole for the head in the body and stick the neck in there. You now have an apple swan! (you may want to sprinkle it with lemon juice to preserve it)
