If you've been doing research prior to making a purchase you've most likely found some cheap multi-size button makers online. The problem with those cheap button machines is they are not made here in the U.S.A. Read an in-depth analysis to learn more about button machines made in China and the problems you may encounter trying to use them.

Step 1

Create the artwork for your button. You can print art off of your computer or simply draw the design yourself with markers. Just make sure your art is the same size and shape as the button casing.

Step 2

Open the snap-in button. This is usually comprised of a back with an opening for the pin and a clear plastic front. You can find these button casings at craft stores or online. A link to finding button casings is provided in "Additional Resources," below.

Step 3

Insert your artwork into the button. Make sure that it fits snugly against the plastic front, then snap the backing onto the pin.

Step 4

Insert the pin into the back if needed. The pin back may already be assembled. If not, you just need the insert the provided pin into the opening in the back of the pin casing.

Gather Pinback Button Faces

Bottle Caps: The metal caps are useful for small pin badges, as they measure about 1-inch across on the inside. If they have retained unpleasant odors, soak in warm water with dish soap overnight, and then air dry. You may want to spray paint the bottle caps with silver, even though you will be decorating the front.

Design with Recycled Materials

Cut a picture from a magazine or greeting card to feature on your pin. For example, use a snowman for a winter holiday button or a wolf's face for a wildlife conservation button.

For Wood, Cardboard and Upcycled Pinback Buttons

Turn all your cutouts for one button upside down. Brush decoupage glue on each. Then turn them over, one at a time, and place them on the pin. Gently rub out any air bubbles. Once your design is complete and has dried, brush over the entire face of the pin with three or four layers of decoupage glue, allowing dry time between each layer.

Use craft glue to adhere the circular picture to the inside of the bottle cap. Remember, the picture should cover the entire inside. Allow it to dry. Fill the bottle cap with clear casting resin, following the label's directions, and let it dry overnight.
