Homemade Handprint Ornaments
This year for Christmas, we wanted to do a homemade craft with my 8-month-old daughter, Zoey…but I was completely perplexed as to what we could do that would actually involve her!
Step 2
Prepare your inedible dough. Mix 4 cups flour, 1 cup salt and 1 1/2 cups water until well blended. Knead it in the bowl for 10 to 15 minutes until the dough reaches a workable consistency.
Step 3
Roll the dough out to 1/3 of an inch thick on a lightly-floured work surface. Place your child's hand on the dough and use a butter knife or a plastic knife to cut out the shape of your child's hand print. Poke a small hole through the top of the cut out handprint so that you can string it later.
Step 4
Bake the handprints for 20 to 30 minutes in your preheated oven. When done, remove them from the oven and allow them to cool.
Step 5
Decorate your ornaments. Use paints, glitter or sequins to give your ornaments their own personal style. Spray a coat of clear polyurethane on your ornaments to preserve them and keep them looking great year after year.

Why Is My Salt Dough Puffing Up?
The number one reason salt dough is puffing is due to the oven temperature. If the temperature is too high the salt dough will puff up. It is better to let your ornaments air dry for a day and then bake them. This will prevent the puffing. If you need to bake right away, bake at the lowest temperature (200-250 degrees Fahrenheit).
How Do I Seal Salt Dough Ornaments?
Once you are done, don’t forget to seal with either mod podge or a clear glaze spray. We like this spray for a durable finish. Adults should do the spraying and always follow directions of the product chosen.
What Kind of Paint Should I Use?
I like to use non-toxic acrylic paint for salt dough ornaments. The color will go on much thicker and more vibrant than kids paint. We like this brand of acrylic paint.
