To get the honey flowing again, bring some water to boil in a pan and then turn off the heat. Place the open honey container in the water and leave it until both the water and the honey are cool. DO NOT microwave honey. Honey is so thick that you can’t evenly heat it without hot spots occurring or sudden boils that can cause splattering.

How can I make my honey flow better?

Heat some water in a pot, and put your honey container in the pot of hot water until the honey turns liquid. This gentle transfer of heat to the honey helps bring it back to liquid form without overheating the honey.

How do you know when the honey flow starts?

The only precise way to be aware of the honey flow is to check the behavior of your bees. The most obvious sign is the level of activity and the number of bees out foraging. Bees will come back to the hive fully loaded with nectar, while other bees are leaving to gather still more.

How long does it take for honey to flow?

It depends entirely on conditions. If nectar availability dries up the bees will remove honey from the frames to survive. Typically though it would be reasonable to expect a super to fill in a month or two under average conditions.

How does honey flow work?

The bees fill the honey cells and cap them off. When you insert the Flow Key and split the honey cells, gravity does the rest of the work, and the honey simply flows into the trough, through the tube and into your jar.

Can you leave honey super on over winter?

Yes, you can leave a honey super or several on the hive over Winter. In fact, most beekeepers do have a super or two designated for use by the bees. The size of the box (boxes) designated as the “food super” for the bees varies from one beekeeper to another and from one region to another.

How long does it take bees to fill honey super?

A strong colony during a strong honey flow can draw new foundation and fill a honey super in 1 week, and sometimes in 3 to 4 days. An average bee colony will take between 2 to 4 weeks, while a weaker colony will take 1 to 2 months.

How do I start a flow hive?

Just hang your queen cage from the centre frame, shake the bees in, put on the roof and leave them alone for one week. If you disturb a newly installed package before they have had adequate time to start their brood nest, they may abscond from your hive. After one week they will have begun to raise larvae.

How often do you empty a flow hive?

This depends on the amount of nectar available for the bees and how strong the colony is. We have had Flow Supers fill in a week during peak times of the flowering season. A super usually fills well within a month during the spring and summer (at peak flowering times and production of nectar).

How long is honey good for?

For best quality, store honey for up to 12 months. After that time, it remains safe but the quality may not be as good. Honey can become cloudy, crystallized or solidified but this is not a safety concern. The honey can be microwaved or heated in a pan of hot water to clarify or melt it.

How do you know if a beehive is full?

Once it's full, it changes its appearance to show honey oozing out and, if the block below it isn't a full solid block, starts dripping honey particles. (The dripping honey is decorative; it cannot be collected in a cauldron.) These changes signal that the hive or nest is ready for harvesting.

What are the disadvantages of a Flow Hive?

Is it OK to harvest uncapped honey?

If you remove the uncapped honey, it will probably mold or ferment in storage because it's not protected from airborne yeast and mold. If you extract it before it's ripe, it may ferment in your jars. The rule of thumb is that honey for extraction should never contain more than about 10% uncapped cells.

How long to get honey from a new hive?

3-4 weeks. It takes 3-4 weeks for bees to start producing honey from a new hive.

From Bee

Honey starts as flower nectar collected by bees, which gets broken down into simple sugars stored inside the honeycomb. The design of the honeycomb and constant fanning of the bees' wings causes evaporation, creating sweet liquid honey. Honey's color and flavor vary based on the nectar collected by the bees.

To Hive

On average, a hive will produce about 65 pounds of surplus honey each year 2. Beekeepers harvest it by collecting the honeycomb frames and scraping off the wax cap that bees make to seal off honey in each cell. Once the caps are removed, the frames are placed in an extractor, a centrifuge that spins the frames, forcing honey out of the comb.

To Home

After the honey is extracted, it’s strained to remove any remaining wax and other particles. Some beekeepers and bottlers might heat the honey to make this process easier, but that doesn't alter the liquid's natural composition.

How Long Does It Take For A New Colony To Make Honey

The first year of any bee colony is all about setting up the hive and getting established. The success of this colony is very dependent on how hard you try to understand beekeeping and how much you plan and prepare for your new hive.

How Long Does It Take To Establish A New Beehive

A new colony of bees requires at least 3-5 months to become strong and well established. Basically, it will take one season for a new colony to become established. But, just like everything else in beekeeping, there is wide range of factors to consider. I have outlined the most important ones below:

How Much And For How Long Should You Feed A New Beehive

The amount you feed a new colony and for how long is a common question among new beekeepers and experienced alike. One thing that most beekeepers all agree on though is that you must feed any new colony of bees and especially if you purchased them.

How Long Does It Take Bees To Make Honeycomb

On average it will take between 7 days to 2 months for bees to produce comb and fill it with honey. But a strong established colony, during a strong honey flow, can draw out a full 10 frame deep box and fill it with honey in as little as 3 days. Sometimes even quicker, in less than 24 hours.

How Long Does It Take For Nectar To Turn Into Honey

It usually only takes a couple of days from collecting nectar to producing capped honey, especially during a heavy honey flow. It is quite the process and for some it will seem disgusting and gross. Bees collect the nectar, mix it with enzymes in their honey stomachs, and regurgitate it into the comb cells.

What Months Do Bees Make Honey

The best months for honey production are most commonly between June and August. But, surprise, surprise, it depends. Again, this will depend on your local climate. For instance, in Washington bee colonies will produce honey from June until August but in Colorado bees will make honey from April to October.

How Much Honey Can An Established Hive Make In A Season

The amount of honey produced by a single hive is dependent on the strength of the colony and type of hive box used.

Did you make this recipe?

Transfer your honey into a glass jar with a spoon. If your honey is stored in a plastic bottle, as most honey is today, twist the cap off of the honey and squeeze or spoon it into the glass jar (a mason jar will work well here).

Did you make this recipe?

Fill your crockpot partially with water. It’s a good idea to fill the crockpot to ¾ of the height of the honey jar, so that the water will not fully cover the honey jar. This will protect your honey from getting water into it.

Tips

If the honey is still not decrystallizing easily in boiling water or in the crockpot, you can stir the honey while it is heating (in either method) to aid the process.

Warnings

Some sites recommend microwaving the honey, but do not use this method if you want your honey to maintain its good stuff. Microwaving the honey will destroy many of the beneficial enzymes and essential properties of the honey.

Pretty awesome eh, even if only for the impressive production values? The messages relayed in this introductory video have generated a huge interest worldwide and made Flow Hive one of the most successful crowdfunding campaigns in history.

The Joy of Beekeeping

Beekeeping is a wonderful hobby, enjoyed by beekeepers across the world. It has so many aspects that keep us engaged and intrigued. These range from the science to a delight in nature. In addition, there is always the chance of companionship and community with fellow beekeepers.

The Problem Flow Hive Claims to Solve

The harvesting of honey isn't the most straightforward of beekeeping tasks. While there are numerous tools available to extract honey from the comb, it does take a little time, as we will discover elsewhere.

Our Attempt at a Balanced View

In this lesson, PerfectBee takes a close and balanced look at the Flow Hive. As you read this, know one thing - there will be fellow readers who look at the title and immediately know where they stand.

What Exactly is Flow Hive?

The Flow Hive was invented by a father and son team of Australian beekeepers who wanted an easier, less invasive way to harvest honey from Langstroth hives. They had a vision, researched it, designed a solution, raised funding and have created a successful business from this idea.

Benefits of Flow Hive

Let's face it, this is a clever design. The Flow Hive folks have a laser focus on a problem they have identified, namely the slightly cumbersome nature of harvesting honey with traditional hives. They then created a product that is clever, reasonably effective at what it claims to do and marketed quite superbly!
