Step 1: Materials Needed

As impressive as these snow flakes can look (I use the word can because I have made some pretty awful and ugly ones) they do not require and special materials, tools, or skills.

Step 2: Fold (AKA Hamburgers and Hotdogs)

When I was in school we developed a specific way of describing how to fold a paper in half. You had two basic methods: Hamburger and Hotdog. Hamburger producing a short fat fold and hotdog producing a long skinny fold. For this project we'll be using to hamburger folds and an angle.

Step 3: Design

Here's where your creativity comes in. Pick a theme and draw a design on your snow flake to cut out. Design must touch both sides and be connected from top to bottom. If these guide lines are not met you will end up with some very pretty cut pieces of paper, but not a snow flake. Don't feel like you are married to a holiday theme.

Step 4: Cut

Cutting is the hardest part of making a snow flake. Draw your design with cutting in mind. Go slow, take your time, and cut carefully. Beyond that you will learn on your own through trial and error. I can not tell you how many snow flakes I have ruined by getting impatient, or over cutting.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

After you are finished carefully and slowly unfold your work of art. It is heart breaking to finish all the hard work of folding, designing, and cutting, only to tear your snow flake while unfolding it. Proudly display your handiwork on a dark background.

Step 6: Example: Joy

This is an example of a relatively easy design. It is made up of pretty thick cuts. I started by cutting out the continents in the O, then cut the rest of the snow flake in no particular order.

Step 7: Example: Bug

I have owned nothing but VWs ('76 Bug, '67 Bug, '06 Jetta). Its in my blood! So why not make a snow flake?

1 Fold Your Paper

The easiest way to cut the paper into a perfect square is first to fold one corner of the paper to meet the opposite edge, creating a triangle and a rectangle. Then, fold the rectangle into the center, creasing along the edge of the triangle.

2 Cut a Square

Open up the piece of paper and cut off the rectangle. You now have a perfectly square piece you can use to make a paper snowflake.

3 Fold Again

Fold your paper diagonally, creating a triangle, then fold it in half again to form a smaller triangle.

4 Fold Into Thirds

Fold the triangle into thirds, being careful to line up the left and right edges of the paper. Trim off the bottom points by cutting along the horizontal edge.

5 Design Away

With the paper still folded, create your paper snowflake design. Experiment with different shapes, sizes, and styles to create a variety of designs and patterns. Have fun with it!

6 Cut Carefully

Cut out your paper snowflake pattern, making sure to keep some of the folded edge intact, or else your snowflake will fall apart.

7 How to Make Paper Snowflakes, Final Snowflake

Carefully unfold the paper to reveal your unique paper snowflake. And that's it! Now you have festive paper snowflakes you can use as creative touches for wrapping holiday gifts, winter wonderland home decor, or any other idea you can think of for your new beautiful creations.

How to make a paper snowflake video tutorial

There are limitless paper snowflake patterns you can try, and it’s fun to experiment with different variations.

How to make paper snowflakes 3D

Decorate your home this holiday season with these easy 3d paper snowflakes! Use patterned paper for bright Scandi-inspired designs, or use white copy paper to add a touch of frost. Here’s a top tip, if you go for patterned paper try using double-sided paper as both sides will be visible as you begin twisting the snowflake together.

19 paper snowflake patterns

You might want to just snip randomly into your folded snowflake, and that’s absolutely fine! After all, every snowflake is different. However, if you want to know what result you’ll get before you start snipping – we’ve got you covered.

Step 4: Fold One Third

Imagine this triangle in thirds (as shown in the first picture), and then fold the right "third" over, as shown in the second picture. If you want to be precise and have a protractor, each "third" in this step is a 30 degree angle.

Step 5: Fold Again

Fold the left third over. Try to get all of the folds to line up as close as possible for the most symmetrical snowflake.

Step 6: Cut the "top" Off at an Angle

Flip your folded paper over so that you're looking at the back. Then, cut off the top of the paper at an angle. Make sure to cut if off so that all remaining layers of paper are equal. As you can see, I'm basically cutting off all of those excess blue edges.

Step 7: Shape It!

This is where your imagination comes in. Begin cutting away from the sides of the paper. Usually, cutting small triangles from the sides is easiest, but don't forget to try other shapes.

Step 9: Tips!

Materials: - Make sure you have sharp scissors and clean hands. Dirty hands make for dingy snowflakes! -Some people recommend using cuticle scissors so that you can make even more intricate snowflakes. I don't like this for two reasons. First, cuticle scissors are not comfortable in your hand. A comfortable grip is essential.

Step 10: Analyzing a Snowflake

If you do want to try and copy a snowflake that you see, or at least get an idea of how to make one similar, try to visualize the slice of the snowflake that represents the completely folded paper. This is one slice out of twelve symmetrical slices.

Step 11: Replicating a Real Snowflake

From time to time I try and copy a real snowflake that I see in a book or online. It's impossible to copy an actual snow crystal exactly because they're simply too intricate, they're 3-D, and some parts of the snowflake are attached with a layer of ice so thin that it looks invisible.....if you tried to copy one exactly, it would fall apart.
