Prepare Your Fabric

You'll want to choose fabric that's woven, like cotton, flannel, or linen. (This example uses linen.) You'll need 3 yards of the fabric. If the fabric isn't pre-washed, wash it and dry it before you start to work with it. A quick pass with the iron will help take out the wrinkles.

Trace Around Your Pants

Take one piece of fabric and fold it in half lengthwise, so the fabric is wrong side out. Lay the pair of pants you'll be tracing on the fabric, with the outer seam of the pants lined up with the fold of the fabric. The pants should lay flat, with the crotch pulled out.

Cut Out Your Pant Pieces

Cut carefully around the markings you made to cut out the pant leg. Do NOT cut along the fold of the fabric.

Sew the Pant Legs

Starting at the crotch and ending at the bottom of the pant leg, pin together the inside of the pant legs. Use your sewing machine to sew a straight stitch with a 1/2-inch seam. Leave 1/2 inch before you start sewing the crotch.

Sew the Crotch Seam

Turn one of your pant legs right side out. Take the other leg (the one that's wrong side out) and put it inside the right side out pant leg.

Measure for Elastic

Take your measuring tape and put it around your waist. Add 1 inch to that measurement. Cut a piece of elastic that size.

Sew Your Elastic Waistband Casing

Turn your pants so they are inside out. Fold the top edge of the waist down 1/4 inch and then press. Fold the edge down again, this time 1 1/4 inch. Press well. Sew along the bottom of the folded edge but leave a few inches in the back of the pants unsewn. This forms the casing for your elastic.

Step 1: Materials

You will need: A sewing machine. A sewing machine is not essential but it will make your life a good deal easier. It doesn't have to be anything fancy and you could probably get one at your local used store for less than $30. Another option would be to borrow it from a friend.

Step 2: Making the Pattern

Fold your pants in half so both sides of the front are facing out. Make sure the seams on the side are on the edge and then place them on your piece of paper. Trace a line a half inch away from the pants and one even with them. For the bottom of the legs and the waist make it an inch and a half.

Step 3: Cutting the Fabric

Pin your cutout patterns to the cloth. Fold the cloth so it is two layers thick to make them exactly the same size and shape. Cut as straight as possible to make it easier to sew later on. Then mark the cut pieces front or back.

Step 4: Sewing the Inseam

Put the two front pieces together so they are lined up and sew the inseam. Marking the sewing line with chalk helps a lot. Tie the thread ends so it doesn't unravel. Do the same to the back pieces.

Step 5: Sewing the Sides

Place the two pieces you have now so that if they were attached it would be inside out. Mark your line with chalk again. Sew the seam on the inside of your legs first. When you cross the area where all four pieces meet trim of any excess material and get it as flat as possible so there isn't a big lump there. Then sew the outside seam.

Step 6: Making the Waistband

With your piece of elastic find a length that is comfortable when stretched all the way around your waist. Fold the waist down enough to let the elastic fit in there and sew it down (the pants should be inside out again). Then stick the elastic in and guide it though the tube by pushing the fabric over it and then pulling it through.

Step 7: Hemming the Pants

This part is pretty easy. Put the pants on and then roll them up until they are at a good length. Measure how much and then roll them up while it is turned inside out. After that you just sew about a quarter inch away from the bottom.

Step 1

The secret here is to NOT cut out a particular size; instead, just trace off the size you need. I’ve used inexpensive taped-together white tracing paper from Hobby Lobby and traced the sizes I needed. That leaves me with all of my pattern sizes and styles still intact.

Step 2

The next step is to sew the inner leg seam (s). Translated, that means pin a Front and Back right sides together at the inner leg seam, then stitch. Repeat with the other Front and Back.

Step 3

The next step in the instructions is the one that I think causes people to curse like a sailor and abandon sewing. Here’s what the instructions say:

Step 4

This step is pretty straight forward. With right sides together match up the two side seams and pin. It should now look like a pair of pants.

Step 5

You will need to form a casing for the elastic at the waist. To do this fold the upper edge 1 1/2″ towards the inside. Press under the raw edge 1/4″

Step 7

AFTER you’ve completed your (optional) buttonholes then you will want to stitch down your elastic casing. Be sure to leave an opening to insert the elastic and twill tape.

Step 8

The instructions say to cut a piece of elastic the length of the Elastic Guide. Exactly, how does the Elastic Guide know the correct waist measurement? There is a better way to get this measurement. Measure 1″ below the waist of the wearer of the pajama pants and cut a piece of elastic 1″ larger than that measurement.
