What are gutter gardens?

Gutter gardens are rather self-explanatory. You take either rain gutters or materials that can mimic rain gutters (like PVC pipes cut in half the long way) and turn them into gardens that you set up in an array of ways, be it mounted to your living room wall, connected together and hung from the porch, or set up in a shelf-style vertical garden.

Setting up and maintaining your gutter garden

If you do decide to make a gutter garden for your indoor or outdoor space, you’ll first need to source your materials and choose what plants you want to grow. There are plenty of gutter garden plants available, so the more difficult part will be finding usable rain gutters if you don’t have old ones laying around.

DIY examples to get you started

Whether using rain gutters or another material, recreating your own gutter garden is actually rather simple! There are tons of gutter garden ideas out there, from strawberry gutter gardens mounted to the sides of fences to gutter gardens built into a greenhouse to make more use of vertical space in a controlled environment.

Gutter Gardens & How to Make Your Own

The picture on the left shows the gutter garden I built, but there are lots of different styles and materials you can use. Some people make hanging gutter gardens that are not attached to a wall.

Materials Need to Build a Gutter Garden Planter

All you need to do is go to your local home improvement store and get yourself some rain gutter with end caps and supports. You can attach these to a wall or a fence or build a frame (see video below) to attach the gutters together and then hang them.

What to Plant in a Garden

As I mentioned about, gutters don’t provide lots of space for soil, so it’s best to grow smaller-sized plants or ones that don’t need a lot of space for their roots. This can also help with the weight of the structure if you plan to hang it on a fence where you may be concerned with weighing it down too much.

Some Things I Learned from Building a Gutter Planter

Since gutters can hold many different plants together, it’s important to avoid using fast and spreading growers, like mint (no offense, Mint!), that will overtake your other plants. That is, of course, unless the entire gutter is mint.

Step 1: Build a Basic Frame

When building your frame you will need to have a top piece, bottom piece, and four vertical pieces between them.

Step 2: Use Glue on The Ends of the Vertical Pieces

Apply wood glue to both ends of each of your vertical pieces so that they are held in place on the top and bottom pieces.

Step 3: Use a Kreg Face Clamp to Pieces in Place

The kreg face clamp holds each of the vertical pieces flush against the top or bottom piece. This way all boards are steady and secure when you are ready to screw them together

Step 4: Use a Pocket Hole Jig to Join the Pieces

The angle of the joint allows for a more stable framework to support your gutter garden.

Step 5: Measure and Mark for Points Where You Attached the Hardboard

Mark on the back of the garden frame the points where you will attach it to your yard fence. Attach a joint appropriate for your fence design.

Step 6: Create a Natural Slope or Angle for the Gutter

Mark off attachment points in the inner two vertical pieces of the framework that create a natural slope. This will look like a slight zig-zag from top to bottom and allows for natural drainage.

Step 7: Attach the Brackets

Drill pilot holes at the points marked on the inner vertical pieces of the frame. Then attach the brackets themselves.
