Described as something of a cross between Ultramarine blue and Cobalt blue, YInMn Blue fills “a gap in the range of colors,” Georg Kremer, Kremer's founder and president, said. “Our customers loved it from the very first moment they had seen it.”
How was YInMn Blue created?
Like all good discoveries, the new inorganic pigment was identified by coincidence. A team of chemists at Oregon State University (OSU), led by Mas Subramanian, was experimenting with rare earth elements while developing materials for use in electronics in 2009 when the pigment was accidentally created.
How is YInMn Blue different?
YinMn is more environmentally friendly to produce than other blue pigments, and is less toxic than the cobalt-based blue pigments (Cobalt and Cerulean Blue). However, the pigment is very expensive to make due to the elements that it contains, and this makes it less accessible.
How much does YInMn Blue cost?
$179.40In 2017 Crayola made it into Bluetiful, a crayon character whose interests are coding and DIY projects. Finally, for its official consumer debut this year, YInMn Blue paint can be purchased in a 1.35-ounce bottle for $179.40 at a Maine art store.
What's the rarest color?
The color, which absorbs almost 100 percent of visible light, was invented by Surrey Nanosystems for space exploration purposes. The special production process and unavailability of vantablack to the general public makes it the rarest color ever.
Is YInMn Blue toxic?
YInMn Blue is chemically stable, does not fade, and is non-toxic.

The chemical formula of YInMn Blue is YIn1-xMnxO3. These compositions adopt a crystal structure in which the chromophore responsible for the intense blue color (Mn3+) resides in the trigonal bipyramidal site (shown in blue). The intensity of the color can be systematically tuned by adjusting the In:Mn ratio, as shown below.

Named after the elements it is made from, YInMn Blue is a complex inorganic pigment created from a mixture of yttrium, indium and manganese oxides. By altering the amount of manganese in the crystal, the color can run from a bright blue all the way to black.
