Measure the Window Opening

Take the following measurements for each window you plan to order, and a customer service associate at Lowe’s will help you find the correct size windows for your openings.

Order Your Windows

When you order windows, provide the opening size only. The manufacturer will deduct the following:

Measure Length

Measure from the top of the curtain rod down to where you want the curtain to fall. The length of the curtain includes the rod pocket, but not the heading.

Measure Width

The curtain should measure double the width of the window for fullness.

Styling Tip

The length of your curtain is a matter of personal preference. We suggest they go to the sill of your window for a more casual look or have them fall at the floor for a more formal look.

Curtain or valance sizes

The width of rod pocket curtains is stated as the flat out width. You would never use the curtain flat out so keep in mind that a 60" wide panel will not look good if you try to cover a 60" window with it. You need to provide fullness by using multiple panels for a window that size.

WIDTH

On most curtains & window treatments, it takes two to three times more material/curtain to provide the proper fullness in appearance when installed/hanging on rod than the actual window width.

LENGTH

Measure the length of the window or area you want to cover from top to bottom. Overall curtain length, anywhere from the sill to the apron or to the floor is a personal preference and need not be exact. By moving your rod up or down a little you can adjust the position of the curtain at your window.

Difficulty: Beginner

Measuring windows to find the correct size for replacement is not a difficult task but accurate measurements are critical. Take your time to get it right; buying the incorrect size will waste much more time, not to mention money.

tape measures

Measuring for replacement windows begins with determining that the corners of the existing window frame are square. Standard window sizes vary but you can be sure that replacements you order will have 90-degree corners.

Measure Width

For a valance that is gathered, and balloon valances, figure double the width of your window. For a flat, tailored look, the valance should be wide enough to cover the width of the rod plus the side returns of the rod.

Styling Tip

Valances can be layered over curtains for a polished look or as layered over a shade. On their own, they allow more light at the window while still adding softness to interiors. The easiest way to hang tie-up valances is with two people.

What is pocket window replacement?

Pocket window replacement is slightly different than full frame replacement. Instead of removing the window frame, like in a full frame replacement, the pocket window can fit inside your existing window frame. This type of replacement is also commonly referred to as insert window installation. The existing window sashes and exterior stops of the old double-hung or single-hung window should be removed for the new window to be placed. Pocket replacements allow you to keep the original frame, trim, siding, and casing intact, and are commonly used when homeowners want to replace a worn window with a new window that’s the same size, and the current window frame is still square, level, and in good condition. It may also be advantageous when the exterior material of the home would be more impacted.

Can you replace a pocket frame?

The condition of your frame can be one of the biggest determining factors for the type of replacement installation you need. If there’s no damage to your existing frame and your frame is square, then a pocket replacement might be possible. However, if there is damage to your frame or it isn’t square, then a full frame installation will most likely be required.

What is a full frame window?

Full frame window installation replaces the existing window frame and sashes. To do this, the previous frame, sashes, screen and trim have to be removed in order to make way for the new full frame window. Usually this can be done with a utility knife, screwdrivers, pry bar, hammer, putty knife, and circular saw, depending on your existing window.

Does size matter when replacing windows?

Size. Sometimes, size is what truly matters when it comes to replacing your windows. If the window you’re replacing can be the same size as the previous window, then a pocket installation may work. If you need a larger opening and a different window size, then a full frame installation can be done to remove the previous frame ...
