Pineapple Painting

Hello artist friends I’m going to teach you how to do a pineapple painting! This is such an easy and fun painting you can do with your kids or for a fun summer themed party. The background stripes are super fun and customizable! I did those with painters tape.

Materials

Canvas (I used an 8 x 10 and an 11 x 14 but this design works for any size)

Traceable

The traceable is totally not necessary because the pineapple is easy to draw! However, if you tried the drawing and just couldn’t get it down, I totally understand! No worries because I provide a traceable! Save the image below for printing or go to my PDF library for the PDF version.

Step By Step Process Pictures

I painted the canvas all white using a 5/8″ flat brush. This might be kind of odd but I didn’t want blank canvas stripes. You can make your strokes go any direction at this point.

Step 1

Sand a canvas lightly with fine-grit sandpaper and remove the dust with a tack cloth. Apply one coat of Water-based varnish to the canvas using a sponge brush. Allow the varnish to dry according to the manufacturer's specifications. Apply two coats of latex or acrylic paint in the color of your choice to the canvas using a sponge roller.

Step 2

Draw an oval vertically on the lower half of the canvas using chalk. Draw large, thin leaves coming out of the top of the oval for the pineapple leaves. This creates the basic shape for painting the pineapple. Use a picture or photo of a pineapple to reference when drawing and painting.

Step 3

Paint the base of the pineapple in a medium yellow acrylic paint with a flat brush. Apply two coats of paint, allowing each to dry thoroughly. Apply a small amount of deep gold acrylic paint to a dry brush; remove any excess paint with a paper towel.

Step 4

Paint the thick, pointed leaves of the pineapple in a medium green using a round brush. Apply two coats of paint. Apply the same green paint used on the leaves to a dry brush; remove excess paint with a paper towel. Press the paint onto the very top of the pineapple, where the leaves meet the body.

Step 5

Dip one side of a moistened flat brush into dark green acrylic paint. Create shadows on the leaves by brushing the paint onto the areas of the leaves that need to appear darker. Allow the paint to dry.

Step 6

Moisten a sea sponge and dip it into golden brown acrylic paint; remove any excess paint by dabbing the sponge on a paper plate. Lightly sponge the golden brown paint onto the body of the pineapple to create a textured look.

Step 7

Apply medium brown paint to a liner brush and paint the pineapple's diamondlike sections onto the body. Allow the paint to dry.

PROJECT 1: Vibrant Pineapple

For the first approach, enrich the colours by turning up the saturation levels. I swapped neutral shadow colours for blues and violets, while the greens, warm yellows and oranges were also turned right up.

PROJECT 2: Conceptual Pineapple

For this painting, I limited the colours to Greenish Blue, Brilliant Blue, Primary Cyan, Prussian Blue (Phthalo), Titanium White, Azo Yellow Lemon and Azo Yellow Medium. I had the idea of painting it as if a glowing light was coming from the fruit, while heightening the effect with opposing colours.

PROJECT 3: Dragged Pineapple

I had a simple challenge for myself here: lay acrylic paint down in relatively large amounts and drag it a little. This approach creates spontaneous effects, softens edges and makes the whole painting look a little less polished.

PROJECT 4: Collaged Pineapple

I often try to paint like I’m working in a completely different discipline, like printmaking or collage – the difference is, I just happen to use acrylic paint.

CHALLENGE 5: Monochrome Pineapple

Black-and-white studies are always a helpful way to distinguish a subject’s form, particularly the many interesting shapes and patterns. Pineapples are pretty complicated objects, so removing the colour should allow us to focus on these shapes and patterns.
