In my experience you can paint over the cold galvanizing, but the paint does not stick very well. The zinc seems to be slick and powdery and the paint won't adhere well.

When you say zinc primer, do you mean zinc chromate? Is it green, yellow, grey, or black? If so, zinc chromate is a standard primer for aviation top coating. If it looks galvanized, disregard what I've said.

Close to 20 years ago, I sandblasted, cold galvanized, Gloss Black spray bombed and varnished some wrought iron on wooden frame. Its still holding up quite well for its age outdoors.

No, paint doesn't stick well to cold galv. The zinc chromate primer is much better in terms of adhesion. Are you working on a galvanized part? If so, I would recommend that you don't paint it at all, galvanizing performs best when left alone.
