Isn't this a hot molded plywood hull? I'd for sure start with sealing the hull with CPES. Then a good hard modern topsides paint that's happy over epoxy. G'luck

Blue will work in England...no sun. Be aware that dark colours require very very very much fairing and surface prep and application skill to look good hard to say what the best paint system is. The wood must be sealed...epoxy or primer.... Your choice. the best is always expensive.

For this application - a sealer with no issues of damp or rot - a thinned epoxy will do almost as well as CPES. There are as many different thinners as there are of epoxy formulations - remember epoxy is more or less a generic term and different propriataries have very different properties, including what they might thin best with.

I guess if you can't find the shade of a colour you like any other way, varnishing over paint makes some sort of sense, but it seems a lot of wasted work and really hard to make look good if you need to touch up a ding or want to add a fresh coat a few years down the road.
