How to Insert a Magnetic Snap
The magnetic snap is indispensable to the construction of purses, totes, and bags. We’ve used them on dozens of Sew4Home projects and decided it was high time the technique had its very own tutorial. As with many notions and tools that add a unique professional finish, the steps for their use are themselves not necessarily difficult.
The parts of a magnetic snap
A complete magnetic snap has four parts: the flat ball side with prongs, the thick socket side with prongs, and two flat rings, like washers, with openings that fit over the prongs.
Preparing your fabric
Your magnetic snaps will not install properly if your fabric is too thin. The weight of this type of closure is not made for thin fabric. If your chosen fabric is lighter weight, you can overcome this by adding one or more squares of a mid-weight fusible interfacing behind each part of the snap to provide stability.
Prepare the area where the snap will go
Cut two 4 1/2 inch squares of fabric and baste sew-in foam stabilizer to each piece, just like you’d do to make the Girlfriends Bag.
Mark the Fabric
Use a removable marker, and make a mark indicating the placement point on both squares.
Puncture the Fabric
There are two ways to puncture the fabric. Using an awl does not cut the thread of the fabric. Snipping along the two lines with sharp scissors is easier, but it does cut the fabric. Myself, I usually cut the fabric.
Use Vinyl to Reinforce and Protect the Fabric
To save wear and tear on the fabric from the edges of the magnet I like to cut small 1 inch squares of clear vinyl (like the stuff used to cover tablecloths).
Attach the Magnetic Snap
Push the snap through the holes to the opposite side. In this case we are using an outsie.
Finishing Touches
Trim the vinyl away from the edges of the magnet so just a little bit remains around it to protect the fabric from future wear and tear.
Apply the Other Half
Repeat this procedure for the other fabric piece using an insie – that’s logical though because that’s your remaining half of the snap magnet set!
Tutorial How to apply magnetic snaps
As you probably already know magnetic snaps come in different sizes and are available in different metal finishes.
Requirements
Using the washer (the back of the magnetic snap), as a template, lay it down on the fabric and mark where you need to make 'tiny' little holes to be able to insert the magnetic snap prongs easily through the fabric. Use these marks as a guide to where you need to make tiny incisions with your seam ripper. Go carefully now! It's just a little snap.
