I want to add a shoulder/crossbody strap to a tote bag. The fabric is heavy canvas. Since it is unlikely that I can match the existing strap color, I would like to sew the D-ring and webbing in the side pockets. That means the attachments would be about halfway down the bag length.

I wouldn't put it as far down as the pocket. I guess I don't really see a need to hide it. Is the bag lined? I would add a piece of heavy interfacing inside to help support the webbing with a the D ring.
