How to Refresh a Porch Swing with Teak Oil
"It’s always amazing—and honestly, really surprising—when you can take a bench that’s never been treated (or an old and dirty bench) and totally bring it back to life."
Step 1: Tape Off Metal and Rope
Start by covering everything except the specific material you’ll be cleaning—in this case, wood. Here, we taped off metal and the rope that hangs the swing. We also rinsed off any vegetation that might come into contact with the cleaner.
Step 2: Mix Penofin Cleaner
Penofin comes in three steps. Penofin Step 1 is a stripper, Penofin Step 2 is a cleaner, and Penofin Step 3 is a brightener. Because we’re dealing with a swing that’s only been oiled in the past and hasn’t been painted, we jumped over Penofin Step 1 and straight to Penofin Step 2.
Step 4: Scrub
After you’ve applied Penofin Step 2 to your piece of furniture, scrub the wood lightly. If you scrub too hard, you’ll raise the wood—again, less is more here.
Step 5: Rinse
Once you’ve given the wood a good scrub, it’s time to rinse. Spray it down with a hose, or pour buckets of water on it—it really doesn’t matter how you do it, so long as all the Penofin Step 2 is washed away.
Step 6: Mix Penofin Brightener
Penofin Step 3 is the brightener—it restores the color of the wood and brings it back to life. Wearing gloves, mix Penofin Step 3 with warm water until the crystals have dissolved, like we did earlier. And remember: less is more.
Step 8: Rinse Again!
This is always a fun step for me—as you rinse off the brightener, you can see how it changes the color of the wood.
How to Refinish an Outdoor Wooden Swing
Refinishing an outdoor wooden swing is super simple with the Wagner FLEXiO 4000. Last month, we shared with your our Outdoor Planter Bench project that added not only more seating for our backyard but also a fun pop of color. Today’s project is one that has been on our ‘to-do’ list for quite some time.
PREPARE
One of our first purchases as new homeowners was this A-frame outdoor wooden swing. That was over a decade ago and it was badly in need of refinishing! I am going to tell you how we gave new life to this swing. It is super important to prepare the swing before painting, and that includes sanding it.
SETTING UP THE WAGNER SPRAYTECH FLEXIO 4000
Take the time to set up the FLEXiO 4000 paint sprayer correctly. For best results, I suggest thoroughly reading through the instructions on how to assemble and use it. Be sure to do a test spray and practice with the included spray poster. Set the pressure control on the X-Boost power dial to medium-low.
HOW TO SPRAY
Change the air cap to match the direction you’re going to paint, either horizontal or vertical.
PAINTING WITH WAGNER FLEXIO
Hold the sprayer about 6-8 inches from the surface and move the sprayer in smooth even passes across your surface. Allow the paint to dry before adding another coat or touching up any spots. This guest post was created by the Juggling Act Mama blog. Visit jugglingactmama.com for the full refinishing tutorial!
