Why do you need to remove tongue and groove paneling?

Tongue and groove paneling has the advantage of allowing you to use fewer nails. This makes removing the panels a much easier and less labor-intensive process. Wood paneling also needs to be refinished periodically. Removing them from the walls is necessary for this project as well. Any nails that are used to hold them in place can be easily loosened through a nail setting tool. This will reduce the chances of wood splintering, cracking, or being damaged.

Can you refinish wood with a sandpaper?

Wood panels can be refinished with either wood stain or wood sealant. Either way, you'll need to sand off the first layer of old sealant or stain. Many wood panels are light and thin enough that they can be easily sanded by hand with light to medium grit sandpaper. You can use an electric sander if the stain is heavier or more difficult to remove. Once all of the panels are sanded, sweep up and wipe away all of the sanding dust. Apply a new coat of stain and/or sealant and allow it to dry overnight.

What is tongue and groove paneling?

Tongue-and-groove paneling consists of sections of wood held together by a locking mechanism. Paneled walls add visual interest, but they can also cause a room to look dated. A coat of paint on your paneling can instantly brighten the room and give it a more contemporary feel.

Why is tongue and groove paneling so difficult to paint?

Painting tongue-and-groove paneling is more challenging than standard drywall or plaster because where each piece of wood joins there are grooves that collect excess paint from your brush.

Can you use semigloss paint on wood?

Use either latex or oil-based products, but choose a finish that suits the room. For example, tongue-and-groove paneling in a kitchen will need washing, so a flat paint is not ideal. A semigloss, however, may highlight blemishes in the wood. A satin finish provides a happy medium between a semigloss and a flat finish. Apply at least two coats of paint for a uniform finish.

How to remove old finishes?

Chemical strippers are an excellent way to remove old finishes and often to be preferred over other methods. But if there's a large amount of wood to deal with stripping in situ could be an absolute nightmare job. Not just because of the amount of work but because you're dealing with a vertical surface, which is traditionally challenging to strip. And not least because this is inside rooms in your home, where you don't want to be using lots of chemicals — the fumes will spread throughout the house to some degree, especially if you have central air.

What is the color of T&G pine?

Depending on the age of your house and the time since the last refinish the varnish may also be what's called "gel stain" (thickened varnish with colour added) which could have actually been at that colour strait from the can, to immediately give the honey-yellow associated with old T&G pine panelling. I hate it too but some people love that colour!

Is it cheaper to rip out and replace a board?

rip out and replace. This is terribly wasteful of course but as awful as it sounds many times it's cheaper than keeping the existing boards, either in money or time or effort or all three. So if you do the math it can make the most sense economically. This is why this route would often be the one chosen by contractors if they aren't overpainting.
