Yeah, it is easier said than done. I wound up cranking back the spring with a screwdriver to release pressure, took whole caliper off then removed screwdriver on ground. Worked for me since I was replacing caliper anyway. The second one went a whole lot faster once I "learned" on the first one...

Thanks to the OP. I had a binding rear caliper and bad wheel bearing and needed to replace. Once I hammered out the clip it was straightforward for the rest of the job. The retainer was bent to hell and did not re-install it. My assessment was there is enough tension holding cable in place.
