How to set a boat shifter?
Drain your gear lube out. Drop the lower unit. Set the boats shifter into forward gear by pushing the shifter handle all the way forward. Set the lower unit in forward gear and lock it in place. To do this rotate the prop counter clockwise while you turn the front shift spline, located at the front of the lower unit, clockwise at the same time. When the prop locks in place CCW, you are in forward gear. Now to keep in in foward gear and to keep it from popping out on you. What you need to do get a bungee cord and grab a prop blade with 1 hook, and wrap the bungee cord around the prop CCW, and hook the other end to the anti-ventillation plate just above the prop. This bungee cord will provide tension on the propeller in the CCW direction, and prevent it from jumping into neutral. Put the lower unit back up. If you have to bump the drive shaft to get it to align in the upper, you need to grab the prop and give it a small tug in the CCW direction. If you try and go clockwise it will jump out of forward gear on you and you will have to start over. Once in place. Remove the bungee cord, and try to turn the propeller CCW. If it's still locked in place then you are still in forward gear, and it didn't jump out on you. Next, Go back into the boat. Bring the shifter into neutral, if it wont shift have a helper turn the prop CW as you shift it. With the boats shifter in neutral the prop should spin freely in both directions. If it's not doing that, then you missed or it popped out of forward on you again, and you have to try it again. If it is all good, fill the drive up with gear lube and off you go.
