How do you staple a joist?
Basically staple all parallel runs 1.25" away from the joist edge. All perpendicular runs should pass through a bored hole 2" from the edge of the joist. Support wire every 4-6' with either staple or through a bored hole. Staple wire within 12" of entering a box or bend. And make sure all boxes have proper wire clamps.
How far away should the wire be from the joists?
The wire should be at least an inch away from the bottom edge (basically, if you ever cover it with drywall or some other ceiling, you don't want people putting nails etc into the cable). If you're perpendicular to the joists, drill holes (I generally use a 1/2" spade bit for 14AWG NM), and then run the cable through those.
How do you run a cable through a joist?
Smaller cables shall be run either through bored holes in joists or on running boards. Where run parallel with the framing member, the wiring shall be 1.25 inches from the edge of a framing member such as a joist, rafter or stud or shall be physically protected.
How many conductors can be run through joists?
Where cable is run at angles with joists in unfinished basements and crawl spaces, it shall be permissible to secure cables not smaller than two 6 AWG or three 8 AWG conductors directly to the lower edges of the joists. Smaller cables shall be run either through bored holes in joists or on running boards.

How much weight can a toggler hold?
If you cannot find a joist, or cannot find one where needed, there are anchors that are very strong. The Toggler can hold 140lbs (each) in a 1/2" sheetrock ceiling.
Can you drill holes in NM wire?
Code says you have 3 choices for wire smaller than 6 gage. For NM wire you can drill holes in each joist or you can first attach running boards to the joists and staple the wire to the underside of the boards. Or you can use conduit and appropriate wire inside of it.
Where should electrical wire be run?
The National Electrical Code suggests that wherever possible wiring should be run along the side face of joists, or along boards run perpendicular to joists, but should be drilled through them rather than pass over or under them.
Can you run wires through floor joists?
Yes, it is standard practice to run electrical wiring through floor joists, although it can be a lot of work. Any joist or structural member should be drilled within the middle third of its width only. (Sometimes one is stuck with cutting a “small” notch in the edge of a joist or stud and covering the vulnerable wire with a metal “nail stop.”)
Can you crush a cable over a joist?
Alternatively fit a suitable batten to the unused side of the joist to clip your cable to that or lay the cable tight alongside the small block if wood where your cable goes over a joist so that the cable cannot be crushed.
Will the short cut ways work?
Will the short-cut ways work? yeah…for years likely….but you’ll always wonder how safe the installation was and if you should have made it stronger.
Can you use fish tape to pull wires?
If it is an attic, you can use your fish tape to pull the wire above the rafters. Sometimes one must crawl around in the insulation which is horrible. In a closed ceiling, it means breaking the drywall, drilling, feeding, new ceiling and paint. Also horrible. My guy used a metal junction box fastened to the rafter braces above the insulation for every connection. This is required by code. All in all, quite a job. Best of luck.
How deep should a hole be in a joist?
As Ben said, for boring or drilling the hole must be at least 2 inches from the top or bottom edge of the joist. The diameter of the hole cannot be more than 1/3 of the joist depth. The hole can be anywhere along the joist’s span, or length.
How many 12-2W/G wires can I put in a hole?
Normally with 1 inch hole you can bring in many as 3 or 4 12-2W/G without much issue I know you can stuff more but from my past experince 4 is about the top you can pull in techiallywise yeah you can get more wire in there but not a wise idea anyway.
How far apart should holes be?
One more thing--holes must be at least 2" apart from each other.
How big is a sandbox?
They are not engineered. They are 2 x 12's, or 1.5 x 11.25.
Can you use issuse with dimison lumber?
Normally with dimison standard lumbers you should not have any issuse with the boring the holes as it was descrbing above this comment.
Can you drill holes in lumber?
Yes you can bore a hole on common lumber either side as long you are not close to the end of the board itself and the lumber itself is good shape no knowen cracks or weak spots at all.
How far apart are parallel wires stapled?
The current situation is a bit mixed. Parallel wires are sometimes stapled to the edge of the joist and sometimes to the side, but not generally as far as 19 mm (3/4 in) from the edge. Perpendicular wires are mostly stapled to each joist and hanging freely between, but sometimes stapled to a board.
What happens when you cut out a section of the bottom edge?
If you cut out a section of the bottom edge, which becomes under tension when a moment is applied, the joist would be significantly weakened. Similarly, if you cut out a section of the top edge, which would be under compression when a moment is applied, the joist would be significantly weakened.
Why run NM cable along the ceiling?
It makes sense to run the wire along the ceiling because that's where all the other wires are. What is the proper way to install NM cable either parallel to or perpendicular to the ceiling joists, given that the ceiling is not insulated and the joists are exposed? The current situation is a bit mixed. Parallel wires are sometimes stapled ...
What is a securely fastened bushing?
Securely fastened bushings or grommets shall be provided to protect wiring run through openings in metal framing members.
Where are cables run at angles?
Where the cable is run at angles with joists in unfinished basements, cable assemblies containing two or more conductors of sizes 6 AWG and larger and assemblies containing three or more conductors of sizes 8 AWG and larger shall not require additional protection where attached directly to the bottom of the joists. Smaller cables shall be run either through bored holes in joists or on running boards.
How thick is a wire sleeve?
Where installed in grooves, to be covered by wallboard, siding, paneling, carpeting, or similar finish, wiring methods shall be protected by 0.0625-inch-thick steel plate, sleeve, or equivalent or by not less than 1.25-inch free space for the full length of the groove in which the cable or raceway is installed.
How far from the edge of a framing member is wire?
Where run parallel with the framing member, the wiring shall be 1.25 inches from the edge of a framing member such as a joist, rafter or stud or shall be physically protected.
