The story behind sweet peas

Sweet peas were first discovered around 1699, on an island off the coast of Sicily by a botanizing monk, Father Cupani. In the 19th century, an Englishman by the name of Eckford began hybridizing and selecting sweet peas, introducing larger, more beautifully formed, and colorful cultivars, referred to as grandifloras.

A sampling of sweet peas

The elegant flowers of garden sweet peas come in a wide, wonderful color range, from the softest pastels to rich, regal, deep hues. Most selections are tall vines that can reach a height of up to 8 feet in a single season. There are also a few short, nonclimbing, border-type plants that grow to just 2 to 3 feet high.

About Sweet Peas

The sweet pea— Lathyrus odoratus —is an annual flower that is at home in a cutting garden, border garden, woodland, or twining on a trellis or an arch. The flowers are now available in a huge range of colors, from pearly white through ice cream pastels to ritzy magentas and inky purples.

How to Grow Sweet Peas

Sweet pea flowers come in both bush and climbing types. Both types are vines, but the bush types don’t grow as tall and can support themselves without the aid of a trellis. Care of Sweet Peas

Scarify sweet pea seeds before planting

For as soft and fragrant as their blooms may be, sweet pea seeds have notoriously hard exteriors. To speed up the germination process, which can take up to three weeks, Myers recommends carefully scarifying each seed (this involves weakening the seed coating) before planting.

Plant sweet peas in full sun and well-drained soil

Once your sweet pea seeds are scarified, Myers says to plant them in an outdoor spot that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight every day for optimal flowering. "If you're in a hotter climate, provide some afternoon shade to help extend bloom time," she advises.

Start them indoors in colder climates

If you live in a colder climate where the ground tends to freeze, Myers says you can start sweet pea seeds indoors during the winter. "Sweet peas can be started indoors up to six to eight weeks before the last spring frost, and then transported outdoors in early spring," she explains.

Mulch matters

Sweet peas are heavy feeders, which is why Godfrey says they'll grow best in soil that has been amended with lots of compost. If adding compost isn't an option, "fertilizing can make a big difference," he says.
