how do you test a valve seat

  • The test flange must be installed at one side of the valve, one side will be injected with pressure air and the other side will be filled with test liquid
  • The valve must be closed fully
  • Air pressure must be injected into the valve after that snoop at the inlet point of the valve
  • The valve should be at a vertical position

So to test the seat, take a new valve–or one that you are certain is good–install it in the guide, give it a good push and see if it bounces back off the seat. A bad seat tends to damp the action, so the valve will feel like it sticks in the seat.Jan 30, 2014

How long does it take to test a valve for leak?

ASME b16.34 require the seal leak test be performed 15 seconds for valves with size less than 2 inch and 30 seconds for valves between 2 1/2 to 8 inch, 60 seconds for valves between 10 and 18 inch and 120 seconds for valves greater than 20 inch. The API 598 timing requirement is similar.

What is the maximum pressure required for API 598?

The API STD 598 requires the valve being tested at 110% of the maximum allowable pressure at 38 °C (100 °F). The ASME B16.34 requires the test be performed not less than 110% of the 38°C (100°F) pressure rating which almost is the same.

What is the maximum pressure for a 2500 valve?

WCB, then your maximum working pressure as per ASME B16.34 table 2-1.1 will be 425.5 bar (6254.85 psi). The 110% of this value will be 6880.3 psi. So you have to perform seat leak test with 6880.30 psi.

Which side of a valve is subjected to hydrostatic pressure?

One side (valve inlet or outlet) shall be subjected to the hydrostatic pressure and amount of leak shall be measured on the opposite side of the valve. It means if you are pressurizing valve inlet, then you have to measure the amount of leakage in the outlet.

How many drops are in a milliliter?

You do not need to count the drops; you just need to keep the time (120 seconds in above example). 1 milliliter is equal to 16 drops. you can convert milliliter to drops after completion of the test and determine the test result.

Does ASME B16.34 provide leakage values?

The ASME B16.34 does not provide the permissible leakage values and refers that to the agreement between purchaser and manufacturer.

Is there a leak in a seat test valve?

Permissible Amount of Leakage. During seat leak test valve shall not leak from the stem and packing, and the leak will not be permissible. The certain amount of leakage from sealing surface of disc and seat is permissible.

What is the clearance for a wet sump engine?

Troutman says that for a standard wet sump engine that isn’t spraying oil in the valvesprings, he normally like to see the valve guide clearance to be between 0.0015 and 0.002 of an inch for standard 11/32 inch valvestems. This is for both iron and aluminum heads. As the valvestems get smaller you can also tighten up the clearances.

Why does my sump valve stick in the guide?

Too tight and the valve can stick in the guide when the engine gets hot. Too loose and the guide can hold the valve exactly perpendicular to the seat, and both the head of the valve and the seat get beat up. Troutman says that for a standard wet sump engine that isn’t spraying oil in the valvesprings, he normally like to see ...

Why do valves instert backwards?

Some people instert the valve backwards from the top of the head to make it easier. If you have the correct amount of clearance, the valve should have just a small bit of wiggle. No wiggle means you are too tight. That’s the easy part; the hard part is learning how to tell just how much wiggle is too much.

How tight should valve stems be for a race engine?

For full-race Nationwide or ARCA race engines that utilize skinny seven millimeter stems, spring oilers and high-end materials he’ll go as tight as 0.0008, but that’s the limit. “You want to be as accurate as you can with your clearances,” he adds, “but if you are going to err, I prefer to do it on the big side. After all, an engine with loose clearances still runs a lot better than one that’s running on seven cylinders because you stuck a valve.”

What happens if the valve seat is worn?

If the seats are worn, they will have a tendency to “grab” the valve. If the seat is good, a valve will bounce off of it. If the guides are good, the next step is to check the cylinder head’s valve seats. A good-quality seat is flat (not wavy around the circumference) and perpendicular to the valve guide.

How to tell if a seat valve is good?

When the seat is good and contacts the valve all the way around at the same time, the valve will “bounce” back if a spring isn’t installed. So to test the seat, take a new valve–or one that you are certain is good–install it in the guide, give it a good push and see if it bounces back off the seat. A bad seat tends to damp the action, so the valve will feel like it sticks in the seat.

1.0 PURPOSE

This method statement shall provide minimum guidelines to carry out the field valve leak testing activities, procedures for Buildings, plants and refinery. In accordance with contract scope of work and project specification.

2.0 SCOPE

2.1. This Method Statement covers the procedure of field valve leak testing for Buildings, plants and refinery.

4.0 RESPONSIBILITY

4.1. Construction Manager is responsible for implementing HSE and shall study, analyze and schedule all construction activities with his department to include manpower and equipment line up as well as other possible resources required for the successful implementation of the construction work activities.

5.0 MANPOWER

5.1. The Piping Superintendent shall control the overall activity of Bolt torquing and tensioning Works. The basic manpower under him shall consist but not limited to the following:

6.0 TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

6.1. Tools and equipment needed should be in good condition and must be checked by Technician/Piping Supervisor/ Safety Officer prior to use. These includes but not limited to:

7.1.1. Valve Field Testing

Field Testing locations shall be approved by Saudi Aramco, including Project Inspection.

7.1.4.4 Test Fluid

7.1.4.4.1 The fluid quality shall be within the acceptable criteria of API STD 6D, API STD 598 or BS 6755 Part 2. 7.1.4.4.2 For shell, high-pressure backseat, and high pressure closure test, the test fluid shall be air, inert gas, kerosene, water, or a non corrosive liquid with a viscosity not higher than that of water. 7.1.4.4.3 For the low-pressure closure and low-pressure backseat test, the test fluid shall air or inert gas. 7.1.4.4.4 When air or gas is used for closure, shell, or backseat tests, the valve manufacturer shall be capable of demonstrating the adequacy of the method of leakage detection. 7.1.4.4.5 Water used for any test may contain water-soluble oil or a rust inhibitor.

What is the maximum pressure for a backseat?

WCB material, your MAP will be 2252 psi (as per Table 2-1.1 ASME B16.34). The 110 % of this value will be 2477 psi. So your backseat test pressure will be 2477 psi.

How long does a valve test take?

The test duration is 15 seconds for valve less than 2 inch, 60 seconds for valves greater than 2 inch

Is a packing gland loose?

The packing gland shall be loose or packing not installed. The valve body shall be subjected to hydrostatic pressure, and no leak is permissible from packing and packing gland.

How to select the test fluid for the control valve test?

We must choose air, kerosene, inert gas, or water for the shell test, seat test, and also for high-pressure closure test. We should use inert gas or air for the low-pressure closure or for the low-pressure back seat test. When water is used for any test then there should be a water-soluble oil or rust inhibitor.

How can we check if the valve is leaking or not?

The valve leakage can be checked by using a hydrostatic test liquid or a pneumatic test gas. It’s not possible to get zero leakage

Why torque valves in both open and closed positions?

In this test, the valve will be torqued in both the open and closed positions to make sure that there is no stem or seating damage or a seal failure. The amount of torque that will be used for this test will be related to the valve standard.
