Testing the high-tension leads
Touch a probe to each end of the HT lead and read the resistance on the scale. HT cable is made with a carbon core in two resistances so that leads of different lengths can have equal resistance. Resistance per foot or metre is usually marked on the lead. Detach each lead in turn.

What is the purpose of high tension leads?

High tension leads or high tension cables or spark plug wires or spark plug cables, colloquially referred to as HT leads, are the wires that connect a distributor, ignition coil, or magneto to each of the spark plugs in some types of internal combustion engine.

How do you measure the resistance of high tension leads and ignition coil assembly?

Measure the resistance Use the multimeter to check the removed ignition coil. Connect an ohmmeter directly to the component connector PIN 1 and PIN 2 in order to measure the primary winding. high-voltage outputs of the ignition coil. vehicle manufacturer's specifications.

What Should the resistance be on HT leads?

The HT lead resistance values will vary depending on the material type used and the length. Typical original equipment HT leads may be rated as 16,000 Ohms per metre. (R16 may be stamped on the lead). There are many variations to this specification, depending on the application.

Do HT leads wear out?

It's common for HT leads to wear out. You'll notice it as your car may misfire or not start at all. The connectors can also get dirty, which can affect how they perform. Dodgy leads can affect how your car performs and driving with a misfiring engine can cause damage that can be costly to put right.

How do you test a coil lead?

To test the primary resistance on the coil, grab a multimeter and attach the positive probe to the positive terminal on the coil. Then, attach the negative probe to the negative terminal. Set the multimeter to 200 ohms in the resistance category and take the reading.

How do you test a HT lead with a multimeter?

To do this, set the multimeter to the appropriate scale and measure the wire by placing the probes on each end of the wire lead, making sure they touch the metal contacts. If the reading is within the manufacturers' guidelines, the wire can be returned to the car before you start to test the next wire.

What happens if spark plug wire resistance is too low?

Lower resistance means more of the ignition coils energy is going towards bridging the gap or the spark plug. That hotter spark can create a more even burn of the fuel/air mixture in the cylinder, and thus, more power output from the engine. Also, all the shielding inside a wire is not free.

What does a weak spark look like?

A good spark will be blue-white and will be plainly visible in daylight. If a good spark is present, the problem is probably not in the ignition system. Check the fuel system and/or stark timing. Weak sparks are orange or red and may be hard to see in daylight.

How do you test the resistance of an ignition coil?

Resistance can be measured with a Multimeter.Set the multimeter to measure resistance (ohms).Connect the positive lead to the positive terminal of the coil.Connect the negative lead to the negative terminal.A typical value would read 0.4 - 2 ohms.

How do you test HT leads with a multimeter?

To do this, set the multimeter to the appropriate scale and measure the wire by placing the probes on each end of the wire lead, making sure they touch the metal contacts. If the reading is within the manufacturers' guidelines, the wire can be returned to the car before you start to test the next wire.

How do you calculate the resistance of a coil?

∴ Resistance of wire R=ρAL=πd/4ρ(2πnlR)=d8nlRρ

When fitting plug leads, should you always push or pull the cap?

Note that when fitting or removing plug leads you should always push or pull the cap, not the lead, to avoid straining the lead and possibly pulling it away from its terminal connector. Leads sometimes run through guides which hold them apart or away from hot, areas. Always refit them in their guides.

How to replace copper leads?

To replace copper leads, buy the right total length of cable, a new set of resistive plug caps and an in-line suppressor (both described in Identifying and suppressing radio interference ) and any terminals you may need.

What type of lead is used for radio interference?

There are two types. Stiff, durable copper-cored leads are used on older cars. To prevent radio interference with this type of lead, fit an in-line suppressor between the coil and the distributor, and use resistive plug caps on all the plugs (See Identifying and suppressing radio interference ).

How to tell if a cable is copper or carbon?

You can tell copper-cored cable by its stiffness, especially when cold, and by the type of connectors fitted to it. Carbon-cored cable is quite flexible - but do not kink it, as the core snaps easily. Carbon cable has resistance marked on the insulating sheath.

Description

Spark plug wires have an outer insulation several times thicker than the conductor, made of a very flexible and heat-resistant material such as silicone or EPDM rubber. The thick insulation prevents arcing from the cable to an earthed engine component. A rubber "boot" covers each terminal.

Application

Placing spark plug wires back into their separators or holders during replacement helps to keep them in place despite engine vibration, extending their life. A common problem with spark plug wires is corrosion of the metal end terminals.

How to Test an Ignition Coil with a Digital Multimeter?

Please make sure that the car’s engine is turned off before testing. Also, conducting testing when the engine is warm won’t provide you with the required results. Therefore, provide some time gap between turning off the car and checking. This way, the car engine cools down and come to the proper temperature. Also, wear safety glasses and gloves while you open the car hood and conduct testing.

What to check when unbolting a pack?

It is recommended to check the service manual or ignition control module. It will ensure that no damage occurs while unbolting the pack.

Why Is The Importance of Coil Testing?

With a bad ignition coil, your vehicle may suffer severe damages and misfire. With the degradation of coils , the ability to supply voltage decreases. Therefore, spark plugs won’t be able to generate spark and ignite the fuel in a consistent manner. In DIS, it may affect all the cylinders. Whereas in the case of COP, individual cylinder gets affected.

How to find the ignition coil?

If you are unable to detect it, try to find the distributor, which is present on the other end of the high tension wire. Follow the wire, and you will find the ignition coil.

Can you test a coil with a multimeter?

Based on this, we would suggest using a digital multimeter for testing a coil. With the right tools and knowledge, it is very easy how to test a coil with a multimeter.

Can you use a digital multimeter to check ignition coil?

Instead of a multimeter, you can also use Ohmmeter and check the resistance reading. With the help of these tools, it is possible to judge whether the ignition coil is fine or not.

How to test wire insulation?

Use a screwdriver to test the insulation of the wires. Get a piece of wire that is long enough to reach from a ground source to the spark plugs on your car. Tie one end to the shaft of a well-insulated screwdriver.

How to check for corrosion on a spark plug?

Check for corrosion between the boot and the spark plug and coil. Remove the boot from the top of the spark plug and look at the area where the connection was made. Make sure there is no discoloration or damage. Then remove the spark plug and inspect the the bottom of it for discoloration or damage. 3.

How to tell if spark plug wires are routed properly?

Determine if your spark plug wires are routed properly. Look at the spark plug diagram in the vehicle's manual to help you with this task. Trace each of the spark plug wires from its connection on the engine block to its corresponding spark plug. It is important that each wire goes to a specific spark plug.

How to check if spark plug is carbon tracking?

Inspect the inside of the boot for carbon tracking. Once you have sprayed the spark plug wires and there has been arching, you need to look at the inside of the boot. Remove the boot from the plug by pulling it straight up and off. Check inside the boot for carbon tracking, which is a residue that leaves black marks all over the inside of the boot. The buildup of this carbon shows that the connection is not optimal and can lead to misfiring.

How to check if a wire is in compliance with the recommendations?

Use an ohm meter to check the resistance of the wires. This can determine if the resistance of the wire is in compliance with the recommendations. Remove the wire from the engine by pulling the boot off the spark plug and unscrewing the wire at the other end. Then place one probe on each end of the wire.

How to inspect spark plugs?

1. Look for physical damage to the wires or boots, such as cuts and scorch marks. Use a flashlight or an area with good lighting to perform a visual inspection of the spark plug wires and the cap on top of them, called the boot.

How to tell if a spark plug is leaking?

Look for electrical arcs around the spark plug wires. Also listen for an abnormal snapping noise, which may indicate a high-voltage electrical leak.

How to check for voltage leaks?

Work on one wire at a time. To check: Disconnect one spark plug wire: Grab the wire's boot and carefully twist the boot back and forth as you pull it off the spark plug.

How to check spark plug wires for voltage leaks?

Why do you need to test spark plug wires?

Testing spark plug wires helps you diagnose common engine problems, such as: cylinder misfires, rough idle, loss of power, hard-to-start issues, and an increase in gas consumption. Failing spark plug wires cause all these above issues and will ultimately clog your catalytic converter. Overall, a weak—or lack of—spark due to a bad wire, ...

How to tell if a screwdriver is arcing?

Pay attention to any spark or electric arc jumping off the insulation toward the tip of the screwdriver. Even if you can't see the arc, you'll hear a cracking sound as the spark jumps to the screwdriver, so pay attention to any sounds as well.
