At the urging of Elia Kazan, the play's director for its 1955 premiere, Williams revised the third act and that revision was performed. But when the play was published later that year by New Directions Publishing, it included two versions of act three, Williams' original and the Broadway revision, with his accompanying "Note of Explanation".
