Critical thinking is an essential skill taught at all levels of nursing education.This article reports on a study designed to determine if concept mapping is superior to traditional care planning as a teaching method for practical nursing students.

The results showed that the construct-the-map activity was more effective than the fill-in-the-map activity in developing the inference skill for the following reasons. This study found that inference was a critical thinking skill which the students needed full autonomy to collect the information which they felt was important and to organize the information in a way which they felt was meaningful. However, the students were unable to do so in the fill-in-the-map activity due to the restriction of the skeleton map. For example, Zach stated “I could not make inferences about the text from engaging in filling in the skeleton concept map, since the skeleton concept mapprevented me from predicting the text information. ” He was limited to relying on the skeleton map structure and the vocabulary list that was provided in the concept mapping activity to make inferences. However, Zach indicated that he had his own understanding of the text and might create a concept map different from the skeleton map in terms of the map structure. It was difficult for him to acquire useful information from the skeleton map for making inferences within the text. The results support Himangshu and Cassata-Widera ( 2010 ), stating that the main drawback of fill-in-the-map activities was preventing students from representing and utilizing their knowledge structure, making it difficult for students to make links of what they knew to a larger conceptual framework. The problem of the skeleton concept map for the inference skill was exacerbated when the students could not figure out the relationships between blank nodes in the skeleton map. Failing to identify the relationships became an obstacle for the students to use the skeleton maps to make inferences about the text.

The critical thinking survey scores collected from the two groups were analyzed using a multivariate analysis of variance to examine the difference in critical thinking skill development between the two groups. The multivariate results suggested that different concept mapping activities would produce different learning outcomes. The construct-the-map group significantly obtained higher scores than the fill-in-the-map concept mapping group in the critical thinking skills: inference, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, explanation. The interviews were analyzed to account for why the construct-the-map activity was more effective than the fill-in-the-map activity in developing students' inference, interpretation, analysis, evaluation, explanation skills. Suggestions and implications are proposed to develop critical thinking skills through concept mapping activities.
