Electricity is delivered to consumers through a complex network. Electricity is generated at power plants and moves through a complex system, sometimes called the grid, of electricity substations, transformers, and power lines that connect electricity producers and consumers.

Why is electricity so hard to understand?

This is only true because someone who did understand the more complicated principles designed the appliances in question. High voltage and high frequency are where the most common and intuitive understanding of electricity break down. Anything above about a megahertz or a few hundred volts and you will start to see relatively strange things happen.

What does it cost to generate electricity?

Interconnection also reduced the amount of extra generating capacity that each utility had to hold to ensure reliable service during times of peak demand. Over time, three large, interconnected systems evolved in the United States.

The smart grid incorporates digital technology and advanced instrumentation into the traditional electrical system, which allows utilities and customers to receive information from and communicate with the grid . A smarter grid makes the electrical system more reliable and efficient by helping utilities reduce electricity losses and to detect and fix problems more quickly. The smart grid can help consumers intelligently manage energy use, especially at times when demand reaches significantly high levels or when a reduced energy demand is needed to support system reliability.

Power Stations

We quite often see power stations dotted around the country, but once again, it isn’t very often that we think about what goes on inside. It may also surprise you to know that there is more than one type of power station and that energy can be created in one of several ways.

Wind

Onshore and offshore wind farms are now popping up all over the landscape and this is an incredibly clean form of energy. Not only this but wind power is thought to be one of the most cost effective to maintain. That being said, the initial setup can be a little pricier than some other types of power station.

Nuclear

When you hear the word nuclear, you could be forgiven for thinking that this was a bad thing but in terms of creating electricity, nuclear power stations are considered to be one of the best for the planet. This is because this method has very low carbon emissions.

Coal

Coal has been used as fuel for thousands of years but in modern times, we are beginning to see the damaging nature of this fossil fuel. Sadly, it is estimated that as much as 41% of the world’s power still came from coal as recently as 2014. While this figure is falling, we still have a long way to go.

Natural Gas

It is important to point out that natural gas is a fossil fuel but when we compare it to other types of fossil fuel, we see that it emits far fewer harmful gases.

Hydro

Hydro power refers to the generation of electricity using water. This is done by using the gravitation flow of said water and harnessing this to create power.

Solar

As you might imagine, solar power stations use the power of the sun to generate electricity. This is something that we are seeing on a much smaller scale with many homes across the UK and the world being fitted with solar panels to create their own mini source of energy.

What is the source of electricity?

Power is generated by electricity companies, the same ones that send you your monthly bill. While earlier, most generation facilities were coal-fired, now there are various options, such as natural gas, hydroelectric, nuclear, wind, and solar.

How many kilovolts does a generation plant produce?

Generation plants provide power to this grid in ranges from 480 volts to 22 kilovolts. Of course, this depends on the capacity of the generation plants. As electricity is released from the generation unit, voltage is stepped up by the use of a transformer.

How does steam power work?

Since steam is water in a highly pressurized state, it is sent to a turbine where the pressure causes the blades on the turbine to spin at a high rate of speed. A shaft is connected between the turbine and a generator. Inside the generator is a magnetic field which produces voltage—or electricity at approximately 15,000 volts (V). For the power needs of CAEC’s members and the consumers of PowerSouth’s other distribution cooperatives, it takes about 10-12 years and between $700 million and $3 billion to build just one generation plant.

How many V is stepped down in a substation?

Once the power reaches its delivery point, it goes through a step-down (or reduction of voltage) process at switching stations. Here the 115,000-500,000 V is stepped down to approximately 115,000-46,000 V before being sent to the first component of the distribution system—the substation – and eventually to your home.

From the distribution transformer, a service wire is connected to your house, which is called the service drop. If your service is overhead, CAEC connects the service wire to your weatherhead, which is the point of connection between CAEC’s facilities and the homeowner’s. The tie that is made on the source side of the meter is the point of connection between CAEC and the member. The meter box in both cases allows CAEC to measure the amount of energy used.
