Emsam (selegiline) patch is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). MAO has two types called MAO-A and MAO-B, which are responsible for breaking down norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin, and phenylethylamine in the brain. At antidepressant doses, Emsam (selegiline) patch blocks both types.
