How long does it take to become a legal executive UK?

If you've completed a Legal Practice Course (LPC) for solicitors, or Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) for barristers, you only need to complete three years' qualifying employment to become a chartered legal executive.

What does the Cilex do?

CILEX is the professional association and governing body for over 21,000 Chartered Legal Executive Lawyers, other legal practitioners and paralegals. Our role is to enhance the role and standing of Chartered Legal Executives and all our members within the legal profession.

How much do CILEX lawyers earn?

Salary. As a CILEx student, you'll earn between £15,000 and £28,000. After completing the CILEx qualification, your salary can rise to £38,000. Once you've got the required three years of relevant work experience, you can earn in the range of £35,000 to £55,000.

Is CILEX worth doing?

CILEX route is great for being able to work and gain on the job experience whilst studying but it is hard work distance learning and working a full time job. I went into law at 17 years old and have been working my way up and am 1/3 of the way to getting qualified.

No Law Degree

If you don't hold a qualifying law degree there are two stages of CILEx qualifications. Stage one is the CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice. This is set and assessed at 'A' level standard.

Law Degree

If you already hold a qualifying law degree or GDL, then choose the CILEx Graduate Fast-track Diploma. This is a cost-effective alternative to the LPC or BPTC. It typically costs under £3000 (including all CILEx exam and membership fees) and takes around 9 months to one year of part-time study.

How long do you have to be a CILEX graduate?

You must have completed at least 3 years’ qualifying employment of which: • 1 year must be served as a Graduate member of CILEX. • The 2 years immediately before you apply for Fellowship must be served consecutively. Qualifying employment is work that is wholly of a legal nature.

How many units are required for CILEX?

To satisfy the academic stage of training you are required to complete and pass the 10 units of the CILEX Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice and 6 units of the CILEX Level 6 Diploma in Law and Practice. Timescales are flexible according to your personal and professional needs and the choice of full, part-time or distance learning can enable you to fit study around your personal and work life. On average, both parts of your academic qualification can be achieved within four years of part-time study.

How many competencies are required to be a Fellow of CILEX?

To be admitted as a Fellow of CILEX you must demonstrate that you meet 8 competencies, which have been broken down into 27 learning outcomes.

What happens if you upgrade to CILEX?

Once you have been upgraded as a Graduate member or been admitted as a Fellow you will be invited to attend the CILEX Graduation and Admission ceremony. A short video from the 2017 ceremony can be found below.

Qualify As A Lawyer Without Needing A Degree

Unlike other routes into a legal career there are no formal entry requirements to start on CPQ Foundation stage, it is open to all. CPQ is a substantially more affordable way for students to become lawyers than other routes into law – delivering on CILEX’s commitment to accessibility whilst not compromising standards.

How Long Will It Take To Qualify?

This will vary from trainee to trainee. Those with undergraduate or postgraduate legal qualifications will not have to start at the beginning and the flexibility of the qualification means it is possible to pause learning and progress at whatever speed suits an individual. Not everyone will want to study all three stages.

There’s a range of study options offered by CILEX Approved Training Providers, including Further Education colleges and specialist distance learning providers, with many providers offering blended learning and other flexible options including CILEX Law School which is wholly owned by CILEX.

What is CILEX regulation?

CILEx Regulation has developed an alternative top-up route to authorisation that will allow competence to be validated through an assessment. This is intended to provide a faster route to authorisation for those who either struggle with the time commitment to complete a portfolio or who are working in a legal role with limited scope to meet the portfolio requirements.

When will CLE become a Fellow?

A CLE who requires practice rights but has not achieved authorisation by December 2023 will remain a CLE and a Fellow of CILEX but not be able to use the designation of CILEX Lawyer.

Is CILEX a CPQ?

Any member of CILEX who is not yet fully qualified and who may choose therefore to complete their studies via the new CILEX Professional Qualification (CPQ), regardless of whether they are a transition student or a direct entrant to CPQ. Authorisation from CILEx Regulation for practice rights will be included as part of the CPQ.

Do CLEs require a solicitor?

Consequently, this means CLEs will require more direct involvement by a solicitor in any reserved aspects of their casework.

Can a CLE be regulated?

As a CLE you can only undertake reserved or regulated legal activities if you are under the supervision of a solicitor or other authorised person. Reserved or regulated legal activities are those specified under statute, including the Legal Services Act 2007 and the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 (s84):

When does CILEX start?

Our non-apprenticeship CILEX courses allow you to enrol at any time. Apprenticeships generally start in January and September each year, but each vacancy is advertised by the employer according to when they want the apprentice to start.

Is CILEX exempt from CPQ?

We are in discussion with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) about potential exemptions to the new Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE) for those people who qualify as  CILEX Lawyers  via CPQ. CILEX Lawyers will be exempt from the Qualifying Work Experience requirement.
