Where can I find NBME self-assessment answer explanations? As of this writing, NBME offers answer explanations for 16 forms in the Clinical Mastery Series: forms 3, 4, 5, and 6 for Surgery, Medicine, Gynecology/Obstetrics, and as of January 2021: Pediatrics.
How many new NBMEs are there?
Currently, the available NBME CBSSA forms are Form 18, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24 and are considered the best and most accurate way to assess one's predicted performance on the USMLE Step 1. However, as of March 24th*, 2021, the NBME will be retiring all of the old CBSSA NBME forms and replacing them with 6 new NBME forms.
Is NBME same as Step 1?
Below are the major differences between NBME and USMLE Step 1. The USMLE exam content has a sum of 280 questions – 7 blocks each with 40 queries. The entire test lasts up to 8hours, which is equivalent to a whole workday. However, the NBME exam has four sections, each with a time frame of 75 minutes.

Which NBME should I take first?
There is no right or wrong time to take your NBME practice exams. There are a few to choose from, however. The UWorld Self-Assessments 1 and 2, or UWSA1 and UWSA2, are probably the most reliable practice exams out there. In particular, UWorld 2 is strongly correlated with your Step 1 score/pass rate.

It massively underestimates your score and causes unwarranted anxiety. Of the UWorld self assessments, #1 overestimates your score by about 10 points and may give a false sense of security to students. #2 is generally a good predictor of actual score performance.
How long are NBME practice exams Step 1?

BREAKING NEWS: The new NBMEs are trash
I took 3 NBMEs before my exam and they completely annihilated my confidence. Took NBME 26 12 weeks out from my exam and got a 198. Then restarted Uworld and when I was halfway through I took NBME 29 and got a 222 at that point not too thrilled but I was fine with it since I had half of Uworld left .

The National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME) writes the USMLE and Shelf exams. To help students prepare, the NBME also release practice exams. These NBME practice exams are the official practice exams for the USMLEs and Shelf Exams. (The “NBME Self-Assessments” are often referred to as simply “NBMEs.”.
When Does the NBME Release New Self Assessments?
Typically, the NBME releases one new Step 1 Self-Assessment every year in early March. That said, there are exceptions:
What are the NBME practice exams?
Also known as the NBME Practice Exams, they predict your Step 1 and Step 2 CK scores. Versions also exist for Shelf exams, which can also be used to predict your all-import Shelf scores. In my work as a USMLE tutor, they are critical to: Establish a baseline, Track your progress over time.
How many self assessments are there for step 2 CK?
Because there are only 3 Self Assessments for Step 2 CK, you need to be cautious with their use. Since the scores are less accurate, your goal should be to track your progress. To do so, you can use the NBME Subject Exams (e.g., Medicine, Surgery, or Family Medicine) every week.
How often should I take NBME?
I recommend students take an NBME every 2-4 weeks. Why? The general goal is to see if you’re making progress, and if so, how quickly.
