Hospital rooms and treatments were regular features of his childhood until the disease went into remission.

Back in Wenatchee, Jess finds the haiku-style farewell note Mark left for her. She knows Mark so well she righty surmises from the spare lines where he’s gone, and she understands he trusts her to keep his secret so he can fulfill his final wish. Witnessing the distress of Mark’s parents, and aware that he’s jeopardizing his life, Jess remains silent, but it causes her anguish. Her moral dilemma intensifies when Mark’s doctors say he might survive the cancer if he resumes treatment soon enough. A dangerous storm then hits the mountains.
