The job sounds really cool on the surface. A train conductor. Then you get to see the real world. You are a babysitter for up to 400 people who don't care about the rules and common decency. Little support from management, off the Northeast corridor, the equipment is poorly maintained, dirty and aged.

The railroad owns you. They call, you work. 10 days and a personal holiday worth of pto for your first 7 years....not nearly enough.

A typical day at work consists of arriving at the station, changing into a uniform, securing the day's train orders, and briefing with the train and engine crew of any slow/maintenance of way orders. Upon arriving at the train we were required to perform an equipment inspection and/or required pre/post departure brake tests.
