How much does a server make an hour?
Many of the answers below are correct. Anywhere from $20-$40 a hour. As everyone reads this though, don’t forget that cash tips, hardly get reported as accurate. Meaning the server can report just a small percent so not to pay hardly any taxes because cash tips can’t be verified. So when a server says they made $25 a hour, for the rest of us that really would be around $32 a hour. Many servers easily make $1000.00 a week if they are working 40 hours and have the money shifts. How much do servers tip?
A big influence on this is the establishment you work in. Menu prices will play a big part. On average, a good server can expect about an 18% tip average throughout their shift. Another factor is the area you work in and that area’s demographic. In Phoenix, we have a phenomenon known as the “Snow Bird season”. Between the months of November and April, we see huge spikes in patronage because many retirees from the northern parts of the country and Canada migrate our way to spend their winters in the warmth of the Arizona desert. During that period, a server can make between $150 and $300 per shift. The downside of this is when those Snow Birds flee back home, during which time a server may only make between $50 and $150 per shift. When I lived in CA, we didn’t experience anything like this. Certain factors such as local sports games, local special events, holidays, summer break, etc. played a part, but for the most part we enjoyed the regular ebb and flow of business.
How many tables are there in a shift?
You’ll attend to your tables throughout your shift as well as help delivering food items to your and other server’s tables. You’ll generally have 3–4 tables in a section. Usually when you are new you’ll have a smaller section with smaller tables until you are able to be efficient with larger groups of people.

Is it profitable to be a food server?
Despite being viewed by many in society as a low paying job for the uneducated, a career as a food server can be extremely profit able. I have known “lifers” who have made enough money to buy expensive cars, nice homes, private schools for their kids, and build themselves a nice retirement nest egg. I will warn you though, it is physically taxing, and takes extreme patience and a real love for humanity with all its ugliness. It’s not for the faint of heart.
