How many avios does Cathay need?
For what it’s worth, British Airways requires 7,500 Avios for this route in regular economy, Cathay requires 10,000 Asia Miles, and both attach the same fees. The respective 5,000 and 8,000 point premiums are both more in-line with the typical pricing model AND they are more reasonable than the 259% cash premiums. Anyway, per The Higher Flyer ‘s valuation of 1.3 cents per Avio, this particular redemption is the dollar equivalent of about $165. That’s good for roughly 4.4 cents per mile if you factor in the extra $49.78 (or 5.5 CPM if you don’t). Either is a pretty decent value, especially for premium economy!
How wide are the seats on a plane?
The seats themselves are, from armrest to armrest, 20 inches wide, and are designed to ensure passenger comfort for the longest of long flights. For one, their padding is exceptional. The cushions are firm, but they’re not hard like a bed of rocks either; they’re supportive in key areas, like around your core, your lower back, and under/behind your knees.
Does Cathay Pacific have adjustable headrests?
As is common with most contemporary airline seats, there are adjustable headrests in Cathay Pacific’s Premium Economy. They slide up and down and can bend/fold inward in order to support passengers’ noggins. It’s a feature that’s not as dramatic nor as glamorous as a steep and generous recline, but they’re important and useful nevertheless, especially when it comes time to sleep.
Can you redeem points for Cathay Pacific?
While paying cash here probably doesn’t represent a good deal, redeeming points for Cathay Pacific’s Premium Economy does. Cathay’s own Asia Miles would seem like the logical and obvious currency to use, but for a short haul flight like this one, British Airways’s Avios are optimal. My one way ticket cost 12,500 Avios plus $49.78 in carrier surcharges, compared to the 18,000 points (and $49.78) that Asia Miles would’ve charged.
Is premium economy cheaper than regular economy?
Premium economy’s appeal is, generally speaking, easy to understand: those who would ordinarily fly in regular economy can enjoy a markedly improved passenger experience without breaking the bank (you can learn more about the differences by clicking here: “What’s the difference between Economy Plus and Premium Economy?” ). That’s not to say that premium economy is cheap, but you can reasonably expect the difference between it and regular economy to be marginal (whereas business costs exponentially more than both of them). In practice, you’ll usually be on the hook for a few hundred dollars extra at most should you choose to upgrade. On Cathay Pacific between Hong Kong and Bangkok however — which is the route I flew — the carrier eschews this typical pricing model. Specifically, at the time of this writing, Cathay’s base fare between the two cities on any given day is about $267.

What miserable fates they have! Fortunately there’s premium economy, which serves as a pain-easing option for some. You’ll pay more for such relief, sure, but at least the increased comfort comes in the form of a generously-pitched and padded recliner, and what the airline claims to be improved meals, and better, more-attentive service. Just two weeks prior, I’d flown to China to test out Cathay Pacific’s new route from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and to uncover some fun foodie itineraries in Asia. On the flight there I flew business class (Waaay posh.
Amenity Kit
Not only is it functional, but it’s adorable. I mean, who doesn’t love pandas? It’s not quite as big as the one in Business Class, but it has all essentials you need to help you get some rest and feel refreshed. There’s an eye mask, ear plugs, a refreshing towelette, toothbrush, mini toothpaste, and a sample size of Jurlique hand cream.
Entertainment
In Premium Economy, you get a sanitized set of noise canceling headphones. Bonus. I usually use my own ear buds, but these were so good that I barely noticed any noise from the inside of the cabin.
Food
When we boarded the plane, we were offered a welcome beverage of champagne, water, or juice. When I asked if I could take two, I was told “of course!” with a friendly smile. So, with a little champagne and orange juice I mixed up a mimosa. Happy girl. And we hadn’t even left the ground yet.
Extra Room & Foot Rest
Here, there really is no comparison. This is what you’re paying so much more for. The ability to not even have to look at the person next to you. (Now, that’s privacy!) The foot rest has many different levels of adjustment so that you can go from reclined, to kicking your feet up, to completely laying down flat like a bed.
Amenity Kit
In Business Class, the amenity kit slightly bigger. And you get lip gloss and a few more Julique samples (which are awesome). But, for the most part, you get the same eye mask, ear plugs, and dental kit to help you rest and feel refreshed. In Business Class, you also get a full travel size tube of toothpaste instead of the mini one-use size.
Food
In Business Class, as in Premium Economy, you start the flight off in style with a glass of champagne. For dinner we were offered a multi-page menu with a nice wine selection from South Africa and meal selections including the following:

When I was based in Hong Kong, I found myself frequently flying the ‘home’ airline of Cathay Pacific. Premium Economy is a fairly new addition on the Cathay Pacific fleet to a number of select destinations including London, Vancouver, LAX and Sydney. Having recently flown both Economy and Premium longhaul on their Boeing 777-300, I thought I’d give you my take on it:
What is a seat pitch?
What’s a seat pitch I hear you cry! That’s the distance between the back of your seat and the back of the seat in front. If you need a comfier seat as Premium definitely offers more padding for your bottom. There’s a headrest that you can move around and a foot rest (or leg rest if you are the bulkhead).
How many inches does a plane recline?
If you’re taking an overnight flight and need to sleep. The recline is 8 inches as opposed to 6 inches on the new Economy seats.
Do armrests go up in Premium Economy?
None of the armrests in Premium Economy go up although do bear in mind that this is also true of most seats in the bassinet rows of Economy. It’s out of your control but there’s nothing worse than paying extra for Premium only to find Economy is empty and you’ve lost out on a row of seats to yourself!
Do you get priority boarding on Marco Polo?
If you like Priority Boarding (well.. after First/Business). However you would get this anyway if you are a Marco Polo member or travelling with kids. You’ll also disembark quicker (unless like me, your toddler will have left their teddybear and then you have to wait until the entire plane disembarks to go back for it).
Can you sit together in a bassinet?
If you need 3 seats AND a bassinet, you won’t be able to sit together. In Premium economy, the bassinets are only available in the side bulkheads where there are 2 seats.
Can you upgrade to Business with kids?
If you want a greater chance of a free upgrade to Business. Although the reality is if you’re travelling with kids, it’s not going to happen.
