I have a hovabator incubator. I only keep a small amount in and then top it up when it gets to a few days before the hatch. I have had a few enquiries about whether to put water in the incubator. Soem one else was advised with guinea fowl eggs to do a dry hatch which I assume means without water.
How much water to fill incubator trays?
I would fill up half of the trays with water. Add more water every 3-4 days until you can get a humidity reader. The instructions with that incubator say to fill only the large middle section. That is more than enough water for mine. I even ran mine nearly dry last time and only filled one of the small side sections.
How often should the humidity be in the incubator?
Usually twice a week is sufficient. The amount of moisture in the incubator is determined by the surface area of water exposed to the air. Under high humidity conditions and for some species of birds, less humidity is required.
What thermometer do I need for my incubator?
To measure temperature, a good thermometer is required. The simple glass bulb type thermometers that come with the Little Giant and Hova-Bator incubators can do the trick as long as you calibrate them against a thermometer you know to be accurate.

What happens if you put too much water in incubator?
Not only that, but the chicks will be too wet and large, making it very difficult for them to “pip” and hatch from the shell. Some speculate that the extra build-up of moisture on the egg will also clog the shell's pores, making it difficult for them to lose their moisture, essentially suffocating them.
Do you put warm or cold water in an incubator?
Adjust temperature for 99.5 degrees 5. Add water every few days to smaller trough only so that it is kept filled. Use warm or room temperature water only. Not COLD!
How do you humidify an incubator?
In home-made incubators, any dish can act as a humidity tray. In order to increase the amount of surface area (and thus increase the amount of moisture that gets into the air) you can add a sponge or a cloth to help wick the water up and allow more of the water to evaporate into the air.
Do all incubators need water?
Do you always need to have water in the incubator? You do not always need to add water to incubators. The volume or surface are of water you add depends on the local conditions and humidity. You only need to add water to incubator if the humidity in the incubator drops below 55%.
Does incubator need fresh air?
For optimum performance, incubators need to be enclosed in a room where there is plenty of fresh air that has been preconditioned with temperature and humidity with a slightly positive air pressure differential between the incubator (setter or hatcher) room and adjacent rooms.
Is 70 humidity too high for incubator?
During hatching the humidity should be at least 60% RH, and in order to keep the humidity stable it is recommended to keep the lid on the incubator at all times. If the lid is lifted after a chick has hatched the humidity will immediately drop which could cause other chicks to become shrink wrapped.
How long can incubated eggs go without heat?
Embryos have survived at temperatures below 90°F for up to 18 hours. You should continue to incubate the eggs after the outage; then candle them 4 to 6 days later to check for further development or signs of life.
How long can a chick stay in the incubator after hatching?
24 to 48 hoursThis is one of the most common questions we get asked at The Incubator Shop. The answer is quite straightforward. Chicks can typically stay in the incubator for 24 to 48 hours after the last chick has hatched.
Can you have too much humidity in an incubator?
High humidity tends to produce a late hatch; low humidity an early hatch. Do not turn the eggs the last three days of incubation.
How do I keep the humidity up in my egg incubator?
If your incubator is homemade, make sure the surface of the water in the container is at least half as large as the egg tray. A long, shallow pan provides more surface area and more humidity. If your incubator is too humid, try a pan with less surface area, or increase ventilation.
When should I increase humidity in incubator?
The humidity levels should be between 50 and 55% and then increase to about 65% for the final three days of incubation. A pan of water under the egg tray provides the necessary moisture in most incubators. You may need to add warm water from time to time.
How often should I add water to my incubator?
I have the same exact incubator. I would fill up half of the trays with water. Add more water every 3-4 days until you can get a humidity reader.
How is the amount of moisture in an incubator determined?
The amount of moisture in the incubator is determined by the surface area of water exposed to the air. Under high humidity conditions and for some species of birds, less humidity is required.
