If you decommission over winter they can last upto a year, but not if you're using it all year round. In any case it's often best to have a fresh brand new bulb in the spring when the algae really start to get going!

They are very easy to replace. It depends on which model you have as to how. It's a good idea to unplug the thing first and then turn off the flow through it. Personally I like to clean the quartz glass sleeve the bulb sits inside at the same time. Be careful not to break it or lose any pesky O rings.
