It later became the part of Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park as the park’s first grove. Today it is one of the most treasured groves of redwoods or trees for that matter in the world.

Finding the trailheads
There are three ways to get to the famous Stout Grove. I chose to hike in via the River Trail from its Howland Hill Road trailhead. This route seemed the best choice to me for two reasons – one, it gave me an extra mile of hiking, and two, the other trailhead for the River Trail requires a fee.
The River Trail
As I stated above, I chose to hike in via the River Trail from the Howland Hill Road trailhead. This made a nice lollipop loop. The trail leaves from the north side of Howland Hill Road. It heads toward the river for a very brief bit before turning and following parallel to the river.
Stout Grove Loop
At mile 0.7 the terrain flattens out and the forest opens up to the Stout Grove. Here the forest thins out and you are surrounded by 300-foot tall trees. It looks like something otherworldly. Because the grove is almost all redwoods, the forest is more open than when you hiked along the river.

A perfect, plush, lawn-like layer of ferns and redwood sorrel carpets the ground.

Sunbeams slant down, often visible as they cut through the darkness, to dapple the tree trunks and ferns. By 5 pm the show is over. I’ve been there many times and still find the transformation amazing. In the winter the angle of the sun isn’t right and the light show doesn’t happen.

Stout Grove is arguably the most scenic of the coast redwood groves in Jedidiah Smith Redwood State Park, and the location on the other side of the Smith River from the highway keeps the visitor count down.

If you go on through on Howland Hills road past Stouts Grove the road is better, still gravel & dirt, but not as bad with holes.
Can you drive Stout Grove without directions?
You really need to print directions in advance. You will not find Stout Grove without pre printed directions. (I posted directions at the bottom of this review). It says you will drive on a dirt road but its a dirt road that's in better condition than some paved roads, so don't worry; any kind of car can make it. You will be awed once you are there. One tip, stay on the "loop trail" or you will end up on a trail that goes along the river which is very, very long. Directions
Can dogs be in Stout Grove?
I can't speak to the whole park, but dogs are not allowed in Stout Grove. There's signage in the parking lot.
Is Stout Grove a hike?
Nov 2020 • Solo. The Stout Grove loop trail is a very easy hike. In the summer you can access the grove from the Jedediah Smith State Park by crossing the river via a footbridge. I would also recommend pairing a visit to Stout Grove with a drive through the Jed Smith Park on Howland Hill Road. Written November 3, 2020.
