Which is better, arborcoat or vertical?
Vertical surfaces perform better. We went back to enough job sites and it still looks good. Most coatings perform better on vertical surfaces, Arborcoat was not any different.

We used a solid black Arborcoat stain later to finish a Toronto carport. The carport was one year old and this was the first coating it received. Again, the report from the painters was positive. The stain left a beautiful smooth finish without losing the wood`s grain and texture. One coat easily covered the wood in a nice rich solid black. This was a perfect look for the old surroundings of the carport.

I wouldn’t recommend it for decks. We used waterborne solid, semi, translucent Arborcoat and none performed well on decks. Deck staining is not our specialty, but we have enough experience to form this opinion. Old decks or new decks, the performance of the product was not acceptable. The prep was good, the weather conditions agreeable but it stil failed. In some cases the coating peeled in sheets and re-staining these decks was a nightmare. The tried and true penetrating oil products were absolutely superior. Film forming acrylics almost always fail despite claims of superior adhesion. Despite our initial hopes and first impressions, Arborcoat was not any different.

At best it will still only last for a while but maybe it won’t peel in that situation. Going over any previously stained deck with a solid latex topcoat is a recipe for disaster. I use Arborcoat all the time and it is a great product for vertical surfaces. I know of no other product that is solid latex that would hold up on a deck anyway so it’s not just a Benjamin Moore problem. Oil based only on decks but nothing will look great for very long anyway.

Is Arborcoat reformulated?
Out of curiosity, have you tried this product since it was reformulated? Due some unfortunate issues with the earlier Arborcoat stains, they were completely reformulated. New versions have urethane and are a three way acrylic/alkyd/urethane hybrid that, in my opinion, holds up much better over time than the old. Personally, for anything other than a solid stain I still recommend an oil based coating (we prefer Penofin for our transparent coatings), but this seems like it could be a good contender.
Can waterbornes penetrate wood?
That is definitely where there is some confusion with this product, Drake. Waterbornes actually can/do penetrate wood that is properly prepped. The early generation Arborcoat (for us, but apparently not the rest of the general population) was a great example of this. The trans stain penetrated very well, and the clear sat on top as the sacrificial coat. That was actually a good system. It is unfortunate that it was not acceptable to the masses from a prep and app standpoint. We could talk for days about the differences between mahogany and ipe, that is really beside the point in the grand discussion of Arborcoat misunderstandings. But in the overall wood species world, mahogany, not that hard or dense. And significantly more open grained. Should work there, but apparently different users will have differnt mileage. Probably best for a mfr to classify conservatively that way. Thanks for the input. Also, we don’t recommend any of the Penofins anymore. There are much more durably and low maintenance oils that have quickly outpaced Penofin on ipe and in general.
Is mahogany hard to stain?
Drake, mahogany isn’t particularly hard (while ipe certainly is). If a deck stain can’t work on mahogany, it probably shouldn’t be in the running for consideration on many species.

Can you recoat a solid stain?
Tony - once you recoat a solid stain deck, doesn' t matter if it's oil or not - it just won't last, especially beach front property. I did a deck last fall where I pressure washed an oil solid stained deck with percarbs - and then put a floor sander all over the deck - and then recoated with Ben Moore semitransparent decking stain, but highly pigmented to match a color. The next spring I asked the homeowner how is deck was doing - and he told me 3 boards were bubbling up - and that was two wet-on-wet coats. It's just the nature of the beast.
