It is far more sensible to stop your car and let the engine cool down. Before you check anything, it's vitally important that you let the engine cool down for at least thirty minutes first.
What happens if you drive with coolant light on?
To ensure the engine stays at an optimal operating temperature, your car relies on a fluid called antifreeze, or engine coolant. Driving with low coolant could let your engine get too hot, which usually spells trouble for your engine, your vehicle, and your journey!
Is it safe to drive with coolant low?
No, it is not safe to drive with a low engine coolant level. Low engine coolant can cause airlocks in the coolant system and an overheating engine can destroy expensive parts like the engine block or seize it completely.
How long can you drive without coolant in your car?
However, if you absolutely must start your car without coolant, it can probably run for about a minute without too much risk of damage. You may be able to get away with as much as 5 minutes of running without coolant, depending on the engine, car model, and how hard you're asking the engine to work.
Can I just add coolant to my car?
There is no problem with just topping up the coolant. You can add the coolant without flushing out the old. However, with time, the older coolant becomes acidic. This can cause corrosion, and afterward, can cause defects in the cooling system.
Can you put water as engine coolant?
Water by itself can't do the job of antifreeze due to its lack of boiling and freezing point range and its inability to protect your vehicle's engine. Plus, it doesn't absorb heat as effectively. In the case of an absolute emergency, you can use water in your coolant rank.
Is low coolant serious?
When the system detects low coolant and a potentially hazardous situation for your car, it cuts the engine and won't start until it's corrected. But before this is done, it can start damaging auto parts.
Is coolant the same as antifreeze?
Engine coolant, also known as antifreeze, is mixed with water to keep the radiator from freezing in extreme cold and overheating in extreme heat. There are many different types of coolant, so it's important to know what variety is right for your car or truck.
What are the signs of low coolant?
What are The Warning Signs of Low Car Coolant?Rising Temperature Gauge Inclining Towards Red. After driving your car for some time, you become familiar with the position of your temperature gauge when everything's okay. ... Heater Not Working or Supplying Hot Air. ... Poor Fuel Economy. ... A Sweet Smell.
Can I run engine without coolant?
The answer: nothing good. Coolant circulates through your car and extracts heat from various components, keeping their operating temperature within normal parameters. Without coolant, there's nothing to extract this heat, and these parts quickly overheat and break down.
What is the purpose of coolant in a car?
The coolant (which is a mix between antifreeze and water) is a liquid which travels in inside the cooling system hoses and pipes and has a function to remove the excess heat from the engine and keep it from overheating.
What is coolant temperature sensor?
The coolant temperature sensor has a main function to monitor the engine temperature. The ECU will use this data to manage fuel injection and ignition time. Some engines have more than one coolant temperature sensor. The data is also used to control the radiator fan and to update the temperature gauge on the driver console.
What is the role of a radiator?
The radiator acts as a heat exchanger and is used to transfer the excess heat created by the engine into the atmosphere. The radiator consists of an inlet port, outlet port, a drain plug, and a radiator pressure cap. The pressure cap plays a vital role in the cooling system. Heating liquid inside a closed system always builds up pressure, so how to maintain the pressure?

Thanks for that information. So basically even if the cooling light is on, so long as the car is not showing as overheating i.e. the temp gaue not being in the red or danger zone then do dmanage will occur ? thanks
Rightboy91
Well, it sort of depends on how fast the leak is / how far away from home / your destination is. Once the coolant is below a certain level the engine will rapidly overheat.
Burnerman
The light should go out once the coolant bottle is filled - check that it does this.
