How to get good at both platforms?
More and more these days you will see mixed environments, and moving forward with MS you might run into Linux running .NET apps or SQL servers. The ability to work with both platforms puts you at an advantage. This is a long process to be good at both, and your skills may get rusty on one as you shift, that is fine. Just make it a 5 year goal and keep working toward it every year.
Do certifications hurt?
Certs definitely do not hurt , but honestly I make my job pay for those. However, skills are the new currency, and the more skills you have and prove yourself with the more valuable you are.
