We love visiting the hatchery. The hatchery offers a free toddler story and craft time during the cooler months (too hot in summer). Alternative 1 was composed of two alternatives - 1A and 1C - because the CDFG fishing closure regulations were subject to change. Alternative 1A would not impact the established American River fishing regulations. 1A would have fishing closures apply year-round within a 250 foot radius of the extended fish passageway entrance and the Hatchery fishway outfall. Under Alternative 1C, the current fishing regulations would need to change to close fishing between Nimbus Dam and the USGS (United States Geological Survey) gaging station cable crossing year-round. The changing of these regulations would require the approval of the Fish and Game Commission.

Currently the majority of Chinook fry from the hatchery are released in the American River near the hatchery to encourage thorough imprinting on their home river, which is thought to improve their odds of returning to the correct river as adults and to reduce straying. About one quarter of the fish are trucked further down to the Delta in order to avoid predation from larger fish, such as bass, and other wildlife. The Hatchery is also taking measures to install chillers and UV filtration to ensure acceptable water temperatures for eggs and fry in light of the reduced snow pack and warmer temperatures associated with climate change.

During the winter, the salmon are running and you can watch them climb the ladders to the processing area where the fish & game staff take the eggs. It's especially fun to visit in November-December when there are lots of salmon in the river and the ladders.

Fish
The Nimbus Fish Hatchery processes and raises king salmon and steelhead trout. These fish enter into the hatchery from the American Rivier by the use of a fish ladder. A fish ladder can be thought of as a stairway leading down to a river with water running down it.
Fish Ladder
The fish ladder is usually opened in November for the king salmon. These salmon will be trying to climb this ladder from mid-November until about mid-December. After that, the steelhead trout will attempt the climb until March.
Fish Processing
After the fish have climbed the ladder, the hatchery processes them. They remove the eggs from the females and fertilize them using the sperm from the males. This is an “artificial” process, but it mimics what would happen in nature. In nature, king salmon die after spawning.
Feeding
There are quite a few long holding ponds at the hatchery. These are called raceways. Fish will be raised in these for about 6 months until they are released into the river.

Try to visit the hatchery when the salmon or trout are trying to climb it. You’ll get a chance to see some huge fish.
