This walk explores the splendid Spurn Point National Nature Reserve on the tip of the coast of the East Riding of Yorkshire. The narrow sand spit stretches for over 3 miles into the the Humber estuary. It's a special place, perfect for a coastal walk or cycle with dramatic scenery and huge variety of wildlife.

Can you walk to the end of spurn point?

Yes you can walk to the end, there is a lighthouse, old war relics and a small estate of houses belonging to the coast guards and their families. The road that used to take you to the light house has been washed away but you can still park up near the RSPB visitors centre and walk to the end. It takes about 45 minutes to go from the car park to the end of spurn point. Before you pass through a gate at the car park there is a board with the tide times on so its best to be prudent prior to setting off on the walk.

Where to park at Spurn Point?

Our walk starts at the car park opposite the Spurn Discovery Centre. (Grid ref TA 41713 15446). Cost of parking is £5 for the day and you can pay for your parking ticket by card so you don’t need a pocket full of change. There is also limited free parking at the side of the road from the car park towards the gate at Warren Head, but your £5 does go towards helping maintain this special place.

Geography

The Spurn peninsula is around 3.5 miles long and was formed 10,000 years ago after the retreat of ice from the last Ice Age. Lying at the bottom of one of the world’s fastest eroding coastlines, the formation of Spurn point is the result of a geographical process known as longshore drift.

Lost Settlements at Spurn

In Medieval times, Spurn was once home to two settlements, Ravenser Odd and Ravenspurn. The former was a port, founded in the mid-thirteenth century. By 1299 it had a market, around 100 houses and had become an even more important port than nearby Hull.

Nature Reserve& Tourist Attraction

The location of Spurn on the East Coast and the high and low tides of the peninsula makes it an important place for migrating birds. Often, summer or winter visitors to the UK will congregate in large numbers at Spurn before flying to their breeding or wintering grounds throughout the country.

Where is Spurn Point in Yorkshire?

Spurn Point is Yorkshire’s very own Lands End. It is the southernmost tip of the East Riding of Yorkshire and at times you are closer to parts of Lincolnshire than you are to Hull. Spurn Point is three miles long and just 50 metres wide making it unique and ever-changing. It is a great place to see birds throughout the year, especially towards September. The RNLI still have a base here and you may spot their boat out at the end of the jetty.

What age can you go on Spurn Safari?

Please note: The Spurn Safari tours are suitable for children from the age of 4. Children need to be able to sit independently and hold on. There is also a lot of walking. I took my son when he was 7 and I’d say from 6+ would be an ideal age for the tour.

Is Spurn Unimog open all year round?

The Spurn Unimog Safaris don’t run all year round but currently, there are selected dates available up until November. They run a variety of tours but the most family-friendly tour is the 3-hour safari. This includes a visit to the lighthouse, a trip to the point and back in the Unimog and a guided walk around the point. The three hours passed really quickly and we loved every minute of it.

The tour usually includes a trip to the lighthouse. You can walk up to the top if you are up to it. Having visited Flamborough Lighthouse not so long ago we decided to sit it out and eat our picnic outside. Mostly because we spotted the wild fox that the RNLI has tamed. Please remember this is a protected reserve where no dogs are allowed. The fox is as protected as the birds and other wildlife are. This was then the end of the tour and time to head back on the Unimog.

Is there parking?

There is parking. RSPB members can park for free (membership card must be displayed on the dashboard). It costs £5 for non-members.
