If you are a Laura fan and looking for an easy Iowa day trip, consider stopping in Burr Oak to visit the Masters Hotel where the Ingalls family lived for three months. The hotel is restored and well cared for and staff will give you a great guided tour as they tell about the Ingalls year long stay in Burr Oak, a period of time not mentioned in the children's books, but now revealed in Wilder's adult memoir, Pioneer Girl. Located just a few minutes West of Decorah, Burr Oak doesn't have much of an economy beyond the museum and the tavern next door but it still retains plenty of charm for Laura fans. If you don't want to eat bar food, have lunch in Decorah before visiting or pack a lunch and enjoy a picnic literally in Laura's back yard. There is a nice pavilion and park just a few steps from the back door of the hotel. As for touring the town, not many buildings remain from the Ingalls time and the house they moved to from the Hotel had been torn down. However, if you make arrangements with staff at the visitor center (located in the old bank) you can receive a cemetery tour. This is well worth the time. Not only do they talk about the graves Laura likely would have seen on her lon Sunday walls through the cemetery, but you get a great sense of the history of the town of Burr Oak itself. There are also many interesting tomb stones worth seeing. Depending on how long you wish to linger, you can see the hotel, town, cemetery and visitor center in about 2-3 hours. A good half day visit. Other sites to see in the area include The Bily Clock Museum, Vesterheim Norwegian American Museum, Froehlich Tractor Museum and Old Fort Atkinson.
