Medication
Recovery from encephalitis may take time. Initial recovery may be rapid but usually falls short of complete. Further recovery takes place more slowly over a period of months, even years. People are different. No two cases of encephalitis will have an identical outcome and people recover at different paces.
Self-care
This form of encephalitis usually affects the temporal lobe, the part of the brain that controls memory and speech. It can also affect the frontal lobe, the part that controls emotions and behavior. Encephalitis caused by herpes is dangerous and can lead to severe brain damage and death.
Nutrition
You may need:
- Antibiotics to treat bacterial infections.
- Antiviral medications for viral infections.
- Antiseizure medicines if you are having seizures.
- Breathing assistance, including supplemental oxygen or a breathing machine ( mechanical ventilation ).
- Immunomodulators, which are medications that quiet immune system attacks.

Can encephalitis kill you?
How do you treat encephalitis?
Is there any cure for encephalitis?

Does encephalitis go away?
Most people who have mild encephalitis fully recover. The most appropriate treatment and the patient's chance of recovery depend on the virus involved and the severity of the inflammation. In acute encephalitis, the infection directly affects the brain cells.
Can the brain recover from encephalitis?
Encephalitis is a brain infection that requires care in a hospital. After the infection goes away, you may experience lingering symptoms that affect brain functioning. Achieving your full recovery potential takes time. In some cases, months or years.
What are the chances of surviving encephalitis?
Mild cases of encephalitis are usually short and result in a full recovery. However, despite improvements in diagnosis and treatment, encephalitis still leads to death in about 10% of patients.
How do you get rid of encephalitis?
Encephalitis caused by certain viruses usually requires antiviral treatment. Antiviral medications commonly used to treat encephalitis include: Acyclovir (Zovirax) Ganciclovir (Valcyte, Zirgan, others)
Can you live a normal life after encephalitis?
Do people recover after Encephalitis? In many cases, people will make a good recovery from encephalitis, but nerve cells in the brain may be damaged. This can lead to long-term effects, which are sometimes severe.
How long does it take to cure encephalitis?
Recovery. The inflammation of the brain can last from a few days to two or three months. After this, most people find that they make their best recovery from their symptoms within two or three months.
Is there a vaccine for encephalitis?
Inactivated Vero cell culture-derived Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccine (manufactured as IXIARO) is the only JE vaccine licensed and available in the United States. This vaccine was approved in March 2009 for use in people aged 17 years and older and in May 2013 for use in children 2 months through 16 years of age.
How can a person get encephalitis?
Most diagnosed cases of encephalitis in the United States are caused by herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2, arboviruses (such as West Nile Virus), which are transmitted from infected animals to humans through the bite of an infected tick, mosquito, or other blood-sucking insect, or enteroviruses.
Does encephalitis cause brain damage?
Encephalitis can damage the brain and cause long-term problems including: memory problems. personality and behavioural changes. speech and language problems.
How serious is viral encephalitis?
Viral encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain caused by a virus. The most serious potential complication is permanent brain damage. Children aged under one year and adults aged over 55 years are at increased risk of life-threatening complications.
What is the best treatment for encephalitis?
antibiotics or antifungal medicine – used if encephalitis is caused by a bacterial or fungal infection. If there's no treatment for the underlying cause, treatment is given to support the body, relieve symptoms, and allow the best chance of recovery.
How is encephalitis treated?
Encephalitis needs to be treated urgently. Treatment involves tackling the underlying cause, relieving symptoms and supporting bodily functions. It's treated in hospital – usually in an intensive care unit (ICU), which is for people who are very ill and need extra care.
What is the procedure that removes the substances that are attacking the brain from the blood?
plasmapheresis – a procedure which removes the substances that are attacking the brain from the blood. surgery to remove abnormal growths (tumours) – if encephalitis was triggered by a tumour somewhere in the body. antibiotics or antifungal medicine – used if encephalitis is caused by a bacterial or fungal infection.
What is autoimmune encephalitis?
As the name suggests, autoimmune encephalitis (AE) is a group of diseases in which the body’s immune system attacks the brain . To treat it, there are a variety of therapies that target different aspects of the immune system. The goal of these immunotherapies is to reduce brain inflammation and the resulting symptoms, as well as maintain these improvements by preventing relapses1.
What is the second line treatment for AE?
Second-line Treatments. There are two main second-line immunotherapies for AE. The first is a drug that destroys B cells called rituximab. Rituximab is actually an antibody that targets B cells, which normally go on to become antibody-producing cells.
Does plex remove antibodies?
A more refined form of PLEX called immunoadsorption has also been used to treat AE, and selectively removes antibodies from the blood, instead of all the other components that are also in the plasma3.
Abstract
Infectious and immune-mediated encephalitides are important but under-recognised causes of morbidity and mortality in childhood, with a 7% death rate and up to 50% morbidity after prolonged follow-up.
Introduction
Encephalitis is inflammation of the brain parenchyma and manifests as a clinical syndrome characterised by a combination of encephalopathy, behavioural changes, fever, seizure and focal neurological deficits.
Methods
The trial is planned to be conducted in ∼30 UK hospitals (tertiary and district general) (see online supplementary table S1 ).
Ethics and dissemination
This trial has been approved by the UK National Research Ethics Service (NRES) committee (South Central—Oxford A; REC 14/SC/1416). Clinical trial authorisation has been granted via the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) notification scheme (Ref: 21584/0337/001-0001). Current protocol: V4.0 (10/03/2016).

How does encephalitis affect people?
Encephalitis can affect people’s emotions and the way people perceive themselves and others. The emotional impact of encephalitis is different for each individual depending on the brain systems affected by encephalitis, their personality, their emotional state prior to their brain injury, their social support network (family and friends) ...
What are the after effects of encephalitis?
Most of the after-effects of encephalitis are hidden (invisible). People affected by encephalitis may look like they did before the illness with more problems being cognitive, emotional, behavioural and social rather than physical. Some of the problems can be subtle at the time of discharge from hospital, but become evident later, ...
What is the term for the damage to nerve cells in the brain?
The resulting damage is termed an acquired brain injury (ABI).
Can you recover from encephalitis?
Some people recover from encephalitis with a few or no difficulties. Other people are left with significant after-effects. This booklet provides key information about the type of issues that people may have after encephalitis, why rehabilitation/support from professionals and families are important and what options for self-help are available.
How long does encephalitis last?

How many people die from encephalitis?
The amount of damage and also its type is determined by the area in the brain that is damaged due to encephalitis.
